Begin jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw begon Zeeland ingrijpend te veranderen. Misschien wel meer dan andere provincies. Eilanden hielden op langer eilanden te zijn, industriegebieden kartelden de horizon en vissers moesten weg uit hun oude havens. Zeeland raakte in de greep van het aanzwellende toerisme en voor jongeren werd de toen revolutionaire rock-'n-roll het nieuwe evangelie.

Maar in de luwte van die nieuwe tijd bleef het oude Zeeland voor veel Zeeuwen gewoon bestaan. Ze hadden geen oog voor de veranderingen of trokken er zich niets van aan. Op een werf in Arnemuiden werd een hoogaars gebouwd zoals dat al tweehonderd jaar gebeurde, een veerman tussen Tholen en Schouwen bleef doorvaren met zijn kleine boot, in Oostdijk maakte de ongekroonde burgemeester zich zorgen over de gemeentegrens die dwars over zijn tafel liep, in een smokkelcafé aan de Belgische grens werd gelachen en gedanst terwijl er aan het Nauw van Bath, waar schepen konden vastlopen of zelfs uitbranden, iemand met zijn laarzen sporen trok in de modderige oever van de Schelde.

William Rothuizen schreef al die verhalen op. Hij ging op pad met kunstenaar Jac Prince die dat alles in zijn fijnzinnige tekeningen zo perfect aanvoelde. De verhalen verschenen in 1962 en 1963 in de Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant. Veel Zeeuwen hebben ze met waardering gelezen en bewaren een scherpe herinnering aan het werk van Prince.

In 'Sporen van het oude Zeeland' worden beelden en sferen opgeroepen van vijfenveertig jaar geleden. Een jongere generatie kan er met enige verwondering van kennisnemen, voor oudere Zeeuwen zullen de verhalen en de tekeningen een herkenning zijn van een tijd waar menigeen met een glimlach aan terugdenkt.
