Arnaldo Momigliano (1908-87) was one of the most distinguished twentieth-century scholars of the classics and of ancient and modern history. Throughout his career, but especially in the final twenty years of his life, he wrote essays on a variety of Jewish themes and individuals. This volume collects twenty-six of these essays, most of which appear in English for the first time.

Momigliano acknowledged that his Judaism was the most fundamental inspiration for his scholarship, and the writings in this collection demonstrate how the ethical experience of the Hebraic tradition informed his other works. Part 1 is devoted entirely to writings on ancient and medieval Judaism. In these essays, Momigliano ranges over such subjects as the stages of rapport between Hellenism and Judaism, the figure of Flavius Josephus, and the salient moments of Maccabean history. Part 2 comprises Momigliano's writings on modern subjects. Here are profiles of Jewish scholars of the classical world (Bernays, Bickerman, and Finley) together with those of eminent representatives of contemporary Jewish thought (Strauss, Scholem, and Benjamin). These essays gain special significance alongside Momigliano's reflections on Italian Jewry and the Weberian interpretation of Judaism.

Silvia Berti's Introduction discusses Momigliano's religious and intellectual formation, the key events of his life, and the influence of Judaism on his mature scholarship. In his Preface, Momigliano offers a personal meditation on his own Judaism and that of his family.

By the time of his death, Momigliano had acquired an international following. This volume will at last give his admirers in the English-speaking world easy access to an important body of his work.

A biography of the lives of Jaap Meijer (1912-1993), who was born in Winschoten (Drente), and became a Hebrew teacher, and his son Israël Chajjiem, Isga or Ischa (1943-1995), who became a journalist. In 1940, Jaap married Liesje Voet, daughter of Ies Voet. Pp. 144-369 deal with the Holocaust period. Ies Voet was a member of the Amsterdam Jewish Council and managed to postpone the deportation of his daughter's family. Jaap, in spite of the German occupation, received his PhD in Jewish history. During a roundup in 1943 the couple and their baby son, as well as Ies Voet, were caught and deported to Westerbork. Jaap, while forced to work on a farm, became a member of the Westerbork Jewish Council and obtained papers for Palestine, thus further postponing deportation. They were taken to Bergen-Belsen with the last transport in February 1944 and liberated in April 1945. Describes the conditions in the two concentration camps, and relates that Jaap also lectured, like several other Dutch prisoners, for the inmates, and, being assigned to the kitchen detail, he stole food from the kitchen in order to help others. After the war, the Meijers had two more children (see the book by Mirjam Meijer, "Mijn broer Ischa" (1996).

Memoirs of ten Jewish men and women (from the Netherlands, France, and Germany) on their experiences as children or adults during the Holocaust period, in hiding or in concentration camps, and on their postwar lives. Many members of their families perished. Some of the children were converted and had serious problems after the war in the attempt to rediscover their Jewish identity. Some adults chose to change their names and assimilate. also relates to postwar experiences of antisemitism in the Netherlands.

Verslag van een zeven jaar durende zoektocht naar gegevens om het leven van de joodse gemeenschap in het Poolse stadje Konin te reconstrueren, voordat daar door de nazi's in 1941 een einde aan werd gemaakt.

Onderzoek naar het joodse aspect in het werk van 19 bekende joodse kunstenaars uit de 19e en 20e eeuw. Eeuwenlang weerhield het tweede van de tien geboden kunstenaars uit de Joodse gemeenschap ervan mensen af te beelden. En de enkeling die het toch deed, bleef anoniem. Net als de overige Joodse kunstenaars, die vooral religieuze attributen en boekrollen vervaardigden, in de anonimiteit, want het ging er vooral om God te eren. Bovendien was de maatschappelijke positie van Joden in de diaspora (afgezonderd en buitengesloten, vaak opgesloten in ghetto's) er niet naar bekend te worden buiten de eigen kring.

Dankzij de Franse revolutie is hier verandering in gekomen. De Joden werden vrij, kregen gelijke rechten en begonnen deel te nemen in deel te nemen in de cultuur van de landen waar ze woonden. Verschillende toonaangevende kunstenaars zijn inmiddels uit hun midden opgestaan.

Kunsthistorica Ruth le Febvre-Feld bespreekt in dit boek dat betrekkelijk nieuwe verschijnsel: de Joodse kunstenaar of architect, die bekend is en beroemd en deel uitmaakt van het culturele leven. Aan de orde komen grote namen als Chagall, Isra en Libeskind maar ook een aantal toonaangevende Isra sche kunstenaars, inclusief de Bauhaus-architecten van Tel Aviv en de bewoners van het kunstenaarsdorp Ein Hod.
