Religie is weer helemaal terug in de Nederlandse literatuur, zo wordt de laatste tijd vaak beweerd. Werden auteurs lange tijd verguisd dan wel doodgezwegen als ze op een serieuze manier religie aan bod liet komen, sinds Jan Siebelinks Knielen op een bed violen ‘mag’ religie weer. Maar klopt dit beeld wel? Was de religieuze thematiek ooit echt weg?

Altijd weer vogels die nesten beginnen laat zien hoe levendig en veranderlijk die literatuur is. De overgeleverde teksten zijnvoor een groot deel verzameld in de Baskerville Serie, sinds 1972 uitgebracht door Athenaeum—Polak &Van Gennep. Ter gelegenheid van het jubileum van deze reeks én het zestigjarig bestaan van de uitgeverij verschijnt nu een bloemlezing van het mooiste uit de oudheid, met teksten van onder meer Ovidius, Homerus en Euripides. In haar autobiografische boeken laat Hella S. Haasse veel van zichzelf zien, niet omdat ze iedereen een blik in haar privé-leven gunt, maar omdat ze wil tonen welke kernelementen in haar verbeelding, en dus in haar oeuvre, altijd weer een rol spelen. Om dezelfde reden verschijnt er nu een uniek fotoboek dat het leven en werk van een van Nederlands meest geprezen schrijvers in beeld brengt. Het boek bevat behalve foto’s van vroeger en nu ook afbeeldingen van manuscripten en historische bronnen. Haar redacteur Patricia de Groot selecteerde samen met Hella S. Haasse de foto’s en fragmenten, en schreef er begeleidende teksten bij.

Figuring explores the complexities of love and the human search for truth and meaning through the interconnected lives of several historical figures across four centuries, beginning with the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who discovered the laws of planetary motion, and ending with the marine biologist and author Rachel Carson, who catalyzed the environmental movement. After the opening essay on the general significance of literature, Eco examines a number of major authors from the Western canon. A stimulating chapter on the poetic qualities of Dantes Paradiso is followed by one on the style of the Communist Manifesto. Boudewijn heeft altijd mythes nodig gehad. Gerard Reve zegt ergens: "Ik speel de rol die ik ben." Boudewijn lijkt meer uit te gaan van de stelregel: "Ik speel de rol die ik wil zijn." Of al die verhalen nou waar zijn of niet doet er niet toe: in beide gevallen heeft hij veel te verbergen.
Als het allemaal waar is, is het tragisch en triest; en is het allemaal niet waar, dan is dat op zichzelf ook weer tragisch en triest. In beide gevallen kun je je het best verbergen - in verhalen die je hebt verzonnen, zodat niemand weet waar die aan toe is. Wil je dat niemand je ziet, schep een dubbelganger die iedereen misleidt en ga zelf de andere kant op.
Zijn aandoeningen zijn daarom geen aandoeningen, het zijn taalspelletjes. "Ik ben zeer depressief," zegt Boudewijn te pas en te onpas, maar altijd met een vrolijk gezicht, en nadat hij weer een wereldreis heeft gemaakt, een succesboek heeft geschreven of volle zalen heeft getrokken in de provincie. En het publiek lacht. Maar die aandoening, die depressie heeft hij nodig en schept hij, creëert hij, omdat het een mooi kader is waarin hij zijn spelletjes kan spelen. Die lach bij het publiek komt door de incongruentie die men voelt tussen de depressieve boodschap en de blijmoedige, gezellige omgeving. Zijn echte aandoening is natuurlijk niet zijn depressie, of zijn doodsverlangen, of zijn romantische pedofilie, of het gejaag op zijn vader. Zijn echte aandoening is zijn onbedwingbare, voor mijn part pathologische lust om te verzinnen, te scheppen. In taal. Zoals het een dichter betaamt. Vandaar dat hij een keiharde werker is - altijd maar schrijven, schrijven, schrijven, wat natuurlijk vluchten, vluchten, vluchten is, voor de waarheid of de leugen.
