Created by outsiders from the tenements, garish, shameless, and often shocking, comics spoke to young people and provided the guardians of mainstream culture with a big target. Parents, teachers, and complicit kids burned comics in public bonfires. Cities passed laws to outlaw comics. Congress took action with televised hearings that nearly destroyed the careers of hundreds of artists and writers.

The Visual History of Type is a comprehensive, detailed survey of the major typefaces produced since the advent of printing with movable type in the mid–fifteenth century to the present day. Arranged chronologically to provide context, more than 320 typefaces are displayed in the form of their original type specimens or earliest printing. Each entry is supported by a brief history and description of key characteristics of the typeface.

Biografische schets van de eerste Nederlandstalige dichteres, Anna Bijns (1493-1575), geboren te Antwerpen. Anna Bijns (Antwerpen, 1493 - 1575) was een Antwerps (Brabants) refreindichteres, en 'schoolmeesteres'. Zij bleef lesgeven tot ze 80 jaar oud was en verdedigde tijdens de reformatie de katholieke 'moederkerk' tegen wat zij als ketterse veranderingen beschouwde. Met name Maarten Luther zag zij als de baarlijke duivel. De bijzonder orthodox katholieke Bijns dichtte in de trant van de rederijkers maar mocht geen lid van dat genootschap worden omdat zij een vrouw was. Anna Bijns was de eerste auteur in de Nederlandse literatuur die haar grote succes vooral dankte aan de drukpers. Haar kenspreuk was: "Meer suers dan soets".
