De Ming-dynastie werd in 1368 door Zhu Yuanzhang uitgeroepen na verdrijving van de Mongoolse khans van de Yuan-dynastie. Ming - letterlijk: 'schitterend' - zou langdurig en stabiel blijken te zijn. De tentoonstelling geeft een beeld van de successen, vooral in kunst, cultuur en handel. De tijd van de dynastie, die esthetiek hoog in het vaandel had staan, kenmerkte zich door grote sociale veranderingen en een bloeiende, consumptieve cultuur. Met name de vijfde Ming-keizer Xuande (reg. 1425-1435) geldt als een heerser die de kunsten sterk bevorderd heeft en de artistieke reputatie van de Ming-dynastie vestigde. De objecten die de keizers bezaten, getuigen van ontzaglijke rijkdom en weelde.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's remarkable series of paintings known as the Berlin Street Scenes is a highpoint of the artist's work and a milestone of German Expressionism. Kirchner moved from Dresden to Berlin in 1911, and it was there, immersed in the vitality of a teeming city and under the looming shadow of imminent world war, that he created the Street Scenes in a burst of creative energy and ambition. Berlin was at this time undergoing rapid growth, and as Kirchner absorbed the crowds and energy of city life, his work responded with acute perspective, jagged brushstrokes and searing color. As the most extensive consideration of these paintings in English, this richly illustrated volume examines the creative process undertaken by the artist as he explored his themes through various media and presents a major body of related work including drawings, pen-and-ink studies, pastels, etchings, woodcuts and lithographs. It also investigates the significance of the streetwalker as the dominant motif of this series, and provides insight on its relationship to Kirchner's wider oeuvre.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) was one of German Expressionism's foremost practitioners. His painterly aesthetic was formed within the Brüche group, in Dresden, where he was one among a number of artists rebelling against bourgeois life and the stale conventions of the academy. Kirchner made his Street Scenes series immediately following the dissolution of Brüche. Today he is increasingly recognized as one of the major figures in the early development of Modern art.

Here are a few of the other maps you will find within.   The catalogue starts with the spectacular Map of the World in a globular projection exhibiting Particularly the Nautical Researches of Capn James Cook... This is an updated 1799 edition of the Aaron Arrowsmith map first published in 1794. This map shows the world in two half globes, one for each hemisphere. Added to the map are the routes taken on Captain James Cook's three voyages, which provided Europe with much of its knowledge of the Pacific, including Australia, the west coast of North America, and many of the Pacific islands. It was also Cook who determined there was no massive Antarctic continent as previously believed. Each voyage is shown by a different colored line, with the last one changing from blue to black in Hawaii after Cook died. Arrowsmith was a leading cartographer of his era and the founder of a line of mapmaking Arrowsmiths who followed. This map notably shows the American Northwest, which he would reproduce in a separate more detailed map, as it was known just before Lewis and Clark set out on their travels into the territory. This volume is the catalog to an exhibition to be held at the Staedtische Galerie Dresden, which will feature Penck's works from a large private collection. It features nearly 500 illustrations from the 1950s when Penck first began his artistic career to 1980 when he emigrated from East Germany. Born Ralf Winkler in 1939, Penck witnessed the bombing of his hometown of Dresden in 1945. The shockwaves of that experience can be sensed through his dramatic and bold works. For years Penck practiced his art "underground," away from the intrusive eyes of the Communist regime that were sensitive to the artist's use of symbolism and archetypes. As these restrictions loosened in the 1980s, Penck allowed himself to create larger, more gestural and figurative paintings. This evolution, from the "unspoken" to the overt, becomes evident in this volume, which includes beautifully reproduced images of his paintings, drawings, and prints, and provides audiences with a fuller understanding of the underlying themes of this highly regarded artist.
