Selma Vos was de enige Nederlander die in China woorden ten tijde van Laat Honderd Bloemen Bloeien, de Grote Sprong Voorwaarts en de Culturele Revolutie. Zij en haar gezin werden slachtoffers van de grootse idealen van de maoïstische heilstaat. De joodse Selma Vos groeide op in IJmuiden en wist tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog aan de nazi's te ontkomen. Tijdens haar studie in Cambridge ontmoette ze Chang Tsao, de man van haar leven. Na de geboorte van hun kinderen Greta en Dop bouwden ze een bestaan op in het China van Mao. Chang was vooraanstaand lid van de Partij en leidde het Psychologisch Instituut, toch bleven Selma en haar kinderen buitenstaanders. Tijdens de Culturele Revolutie werd Chang uit zijn functie gezet en door zijn collega's aangevallen. Selma, lerares aan de Tweede-talenschool, werd uiteindelijk samen met hem gearresteerd. De Culturele Revolutie betekende de ondergang van het hele gezin.

Johan Rudolf Thorbecke wordt algemeen gezien als de grootste staatsman die Nederland heeft voortgebracht: de grondlegger van het moderne Nederlandse staatsbestel. Er is ongelooflijk veel over hem geschreven, maar de laatste biografie van Thorbecke dateert uit de jaren twintig van de twintigste eeuw. De verschijning van dit boek is dan ook een bijzondere gebeurtenis. Op basis van nieuw archiefmateriaal en de recentelijk voltooide uitgave van Thorbeckes briefwisseling laat Drentje zien dat de beroemde hervormer van 1848 in zijn hart een filosoof was. Thorbeckes studiereis door Duitsland (1820-1824) bracht hem in contact met het idealistische denken van Hegel, Fichte en Schelling, wat hem echter vervreemdde van de Nederlandse cultuur. Een van de saillante details in Drentjes boek is dat de door het spinozisme beïnvloede Thorbecke niet ver verwijderd was van het atheïsme van zijn aartsvijand Multatuli, met wie hij trouwens ook een onmiskenbare rechtlijnigheid en een onoplosbare haat-liefdeverhouding met Nederland deelde.

Juliana (1909-2004) was een door velen geliefde vorstin; niettemin weten we weinig van haar persoonlijk leven. Juliana was grillig en gretig; gelovig en goedgelovig. Gewoon was ze in elk geval niet. Ze moest functioneren in een wereld van zich vaak superieur voelende mannen. En zoals ze zich tegen allerlei andere conventies verzette, verzette Juliana zich van jongs af aan tegen de achterstelling van vrouwen. Withuis kon haar werk baseren op brieven en ander nooit eerder gepubliceerd privémateriaal. Memoires van de radio-dj Rob Stenders (geboren in 1965). In dit boek verhaalt hij over zijn carrière in de omroepwereld. Zoals iedereen dat van hem gewend is neemt hij hierbij geen blad voor de mond, en met de nodige zelfspot neemt hij ook zichzelf genadeloos onder de loep.

De Antwerpse auteur Willem Elsschot (1882-1960) is eigenlijk maar dertig jaar literair actief geweest. Vóór alles was hij de reclameman/'marketeer' Alfons De Ridder. Zijn zakelijke correspondentie, hoofdzakelijk in het Frans geschreven, overtreft dan ook in omvang vele malen zijn literaire brievenproductie. In 1993 bezorgde Vic van de Reijt samen met Lidewijde Paris de Brieven-editie, waarin vooral het schrijversleven aandacht kreeg. De afgelopen jaren kreeg hij toegang tot De Ridders zakelijk archief, dat wonderwel bewaard gebleven is in een vochtige Antwerpse kelder. De vele ontdekkingen die hij daarin deed vormen het hart van een Elsschot-biografie die voor het eerst recht doet aan de schrijver én de zakenman. En dan blijkt dat de zachtmoedige Frans Laarmans het in de praktijk vaak tegen mijnheer Boorman moest afleggen.
