Cornelis Jetses werd beroemd door zijn historische taferelen en vooral van de tekeningen van Ot en Sien en Afke's tiental. Veel minder bekend zijn de prachtige tekeningen die hij maakte voor de sprookjes van onder anderen Andersen en Grimm.
Jan A. Niemeijer vult deze lacune in Jetses' werk met dit fraaie en kleurrijke overzicht over de beroemde illustrator als sprookjestekenaar. Het staat onomstotelijk vast dat men nog steeds niet is uitgekeken op het werk van Cornelis Jetses (1873-1955). Aan zijn verfijnde tekeningen en aquarellen voegde hij een bijzondere dimensie toe, waardoor ze ook nu nog boeien en fascineren. Wat ook in zijn sprookjesprenten opvalt, is zijn uitstekende compositievermogen en de knappe verdeling van de objecten over het vlak. Zijn aquarellen zijn prachtig transparant, zodat de donkerste partijen nog doorzichtig blijven en de helderste kleuren warm en feestelijk opbloeien. In zijn illustraties paart hij monumentaliteit aan speelse beweeglijkheid. Altijd ademen zijn tekeningen sfeer.

Jan A. Niemeijer uit Groningen is de absolute kenner van het werk van Cornelis Jetses. Iedereen is elke dag omringd door architectuur. Zeker in Nederland waar vrijwel iedere vierkante meter door mensenhand is gevormd en ingericht. De inrichting van stad en land geeft in belangrijke mate vorm aan de samenleving. Bovendien is met architectuur, stedebouw en ruimtelijke ordening veel gemeenschapsgeld gemoeid, wat het belang nog eens onderstreept. In het proces van bouwen, vernieuwen en slopen vormen opdrachtgever, architect, bouwer en gebruiker onlosmakelijke schakels. De architect, als ontwerper, heeft hierin een voorname plaats.
