The role played by ideology in the evolution of civilizations is being energetically debated by archaeologists, but until now the theoretical debates have had little impact on the actual interpretation of field data from Mesoamerica or South America. Studies on pre-Columbian ideology have generally used historical, ethnohistorical, and iconographic data to look synchronically at specific ancient religions. Little progress has been made in applying archaeological information to address the broader problem of the role of ideology in prehistoric culture change... The authors of these papers take a variety of theoretical approaches, seeking to understand how ideology interacts with the ecological, economic, and political factors involved in culture change. They are concerned not with ideologies or cosmologies per se but with the effect of ideology on power relations, since the expansions and collapses of civilizations are, in the end, the successes and failures of political systems.

Op 10 mei 1940 viel het Duitse leger van Adolf Hitler België binnen. Vier jaar lang werd België bezet. Waarom viel Hitler juist ons land aan? Welk beeld had hij van België? Welke toekomst zag hij voor de Belgen in zijn Groot Germaanse Rijk? Zijn Blitzkrieg was zo overtuigend dat velen, zelfs zijn hardnekkigste tegenstanders, aanvankelijk geloofden in een ultieme oorlogsoverwinning van Hitler. Nog meer, de naar Frankrijk gevluchte Belgische regering ondernam pogingen om met de Duitse regering van Hitler in contact te komen en aan te stilten op een vredesakkoord. In de naoorlogse historische literatuur is dit aspect van de Belgische geschiedenis van de Tweede Wereldoorlog altijd onderbelicht gebleven. In zijn boek 'Hitler en de Belgen' ontrafelt Bert Cornelis deze weinig bekende episode. Dat er zelfs in de hoogste koninklijke en politieke kringen over een mogelijke samenwerking met de Duitse dictator werd nagedacht, was een vervelend gegeven waar in de naoorlogse zegeroes en tijdens de berechting van de collaboratie geen plaats voor was. Cornelis reconstrueert ook het verblijf van de Führer in het Waalse Brûly-de-Pesche in juni 1940 en zijn tochten door Vlaanderen en doet het gedetailleerde relaas van alle Belgen die ooit door Hitler werden ontvangen - van koning Leopold III over ambassadeur Jacques Davignon tot de Waalse Rex-leider Léon Degrelle. Daarbij gaat de auteur de vraag niet uit de weg waarom niet één vooraanstaande Vlaamse collaborateur in de buurt van de Führer geraakte. Hitler had grote twijfels over het politieke lot van de Belgen. Ook die aarzelende houding brengt het boek in beeld. Hij wachtte tot het einde, net voor de bevrijding begin september 1944, om België op te splitsen in een Reichsgau Flandern en een Reichsgau Wallonien. Even dacht Hitler eraan om tijdens het Ardennen-offensief midden december 1944 België opnieuw te veroveren en zijn België-politiek nieuw leven in te blazen. Dit alles mislukte en leidde tot zijn ondergang.0.

‘Anti-Judaïsme’ en ‘antisemitisme’ zijn meer dan ooit delicate en beladen begrippen. ‘Revisionisme’ en ‘antizionisme’ zijn dat vandaag allicht nog meer. Een serene, zo objectief mogelijke dialoog over het antisemitisme kan waarschijnlijk meer doen tegen de opnieuw toenemende onverdraagzaamheid dan tientallen wetten en evenveel taboes. Ludo Abicht (1936) is filosoof en publicist. Hij doceerde en publiceerde veel over het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict, Joodse cultuur en geschiedenis, actief pluralisme, ethiek, integratie en nationalisme. Recent publiceerde hij 'De Bijbel: een vrijzinnige lezing' en 'De Joden van Antwerpen'.

Dervish is the story of the rise and fall of an African Empire. It began in the Sudan in the 1880s with a localized holy war fought against the decadent Turkish-Egyptian overlords. It was led by Mohammed Ahme Ibn Al-Sayid Abdullah -- the Mahdi -- and was soon to engulf a million square miles of arid territory. It forced the hand of a reluctant British Liberal Government, which was then approaching the zenith of its imperial power, and led to the disaster of the infamous Hicks Expedition and the death of General Gordon at Khartoum. Using first-hand accounts and diaries of participants, the author brilliantly describes the growth of the Mahdist movement and the extraordinary devotion and discipline of the Dervish troops. Set against them, with stoic endurance, were British, Egyptian and Sudanese soldiers. The resulting fierce engagements inspired amazing feats of courage and daring on both sides. The Dervish Empire survived the death of the Mahdi by 13 years, ending at the Battle of Omdurman and Kitchener's reconquest of the Sudan.

Sutherland legt op onbevangen en ondogmatische wijze originele verbanden tussen vaak reeds lang bekende feiten. Hij beziet het eb en vloed van steeds dezelfde politieke tegenpolen met een koele terughoudendheid die soms een post-modernistische glimlach lijkt te verbergen over het ideologisch lawaai dat inzette met de bestorming van de Bastille in 1789 en (verlopig) verstomde met Napoleons nederlaag bij Waterloo in 1815. De vertaling uit het Engels is bijzonder vlot leesbaar, maar niet zonder een paar onhandigheidjes. Een uitstekend boek, zeker ook geschikt voor de redelijk ontwikkelde leek.
