Walker Evans's radical photography of the 1930s demonstrated that unembellished photographic fact could serve as a highly poetic language. These works expanded the potential of the art of photography and at the same time defined a lasting iconography that recognized advertising, movies, and car culture as central images of modern American identity. Published in conjunction with the second of three cycles of millennial exhibitions (MoMA2000) at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, this book focuses on Evans as a central figure in the arts of the 1920s and 1930s.

This superbly illustrated volume includes works in photography and other mediums that influenced Evans or were influenced by him, or which resonate in a significant way with aspects of his imagery, sensibility, and style. Among the other artists whose work is featured are: Eugene Atget, Mathew Brady, Stuart Davis, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, August Sander, Andy Warhol, and Edward Weston.

The Visual History of Type is a comprehensive, detailed survey of the major typefaces produced since the advent of printing with movable type in the mid–fifteenth century to the present day. Arranged chronologically to provide context, more than 320 typefaces are displayed in the form of their original type specimens or earliest printing. Each entry is supported by a brief history and description of key characteristics of the typeface.

This book will be the definitive publication in its field, appealing to graphic designers, educators, historians and design students. It will also be a significant resource for professional type designers and students of type.

Eve Arnold, born in 1912 to Russian immigrant parents in Philadelphia, died in London in 2012 shortly before her 100th birthday. One of the great women photographers of the 20th century, Eve Arnold joined the legendary Magnum agency in 1951 and became its first full female member in 1957. Published in honor of her 100th birthday and in memory of the grande dame of photojournalism, this lavishly illustrated monograph is a collection of Eve Arnold's most famous photo documentaries. Accompanied by her commentaries, these include New York by Night, Fashion Shows in Harlem (1950), A Baby's Momentous First Five Minutes, Haiti Voodoo, and Malcolm X, as well as her travel photographs from Afghanistan (from the late 60s), China and India (circa 1980), and her legendary portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Isabella Rossellini, Clark Gable, Peter O'Toole, and Anthony Quinn.

Robert Mapplethorpe's wide, provocative and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. The American photographer is mostly known for images that simultaneously challenge and adhere to classical aesthetic standards: stylised compositions of male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes and studio portraits of artists and celebrities, to list a few of his preferred genres. Since 1977 Germano Celant has come in contact with Robert Mapplethorpe, realising interviews and writing essays on the occasion of several publications and exhibitions. For the first time, this volume gathers the complete anthology of Celant's writings on the artist: from the 1983 exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, projected with the collaboration of the artist himself, to the posthumous writings published in the catalogues prepared on the occasion of the exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg since 1990. This book, through over 140 images and texts that appear both personal and scientific, aims to pay tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe's contribution to the history of photography.

Arms Against Fury examines the dramatic struggle of the Afghan people through the lens of Magnum photographers, dating back to co-founder George Rodger's documentation of the country's role in World War II. Ever since, Magnum's intrepid photographers have crisscrossed the country's striking landscape from the Central Asian steppes to the parched southern desert by way of the Hindu Kush mountains surrounding Kabul and the adjacent Panjshir Valley.

As early as the 1950s, Eve Arnold and Marc Riboud filed unprecedented stories from a legendary Shangri-La, showing a small kingdom struggling for statehood against the forces of underdevelopment and unfortunate geographic position during the Cold War. The ultimate overthrow of the monarchy and brutal liquidation of Afghanistan's constitutional government in 1978 heralded the arrival of Soviet-style communism. Peasants in Nuristan rebelled immediately and initiated a jihad that was covered first by Raymond Depardon and then by Steve McCurry, and later by renowned photojournalist Abbas, who also focused on the progress of the mujahedin, who eventually faced a massive Red Army invasion and savage aerial bombardments.

The victory against the Soviets also signaled the beginning of a civil war that began in 1992. Documented by Luc Delahaye, Christopher Steele-Perkins, Abbas, and Steve McCurry, Afghan militias destroyed large swathes of Kabul. The Taliban militia subdued warring factions in 1996 and proclaimed an Islamic emirate. Steele-Perkins was one of the few journalists to report from Afghanistan during this period of theocratic tyranny. In the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States, the hated Taliban were shaken from power by a loose alliance of mujahedin backed by American forces. Yet nothing seemed to remedy the miserable spectacle of a ruined country littered with ten million land mines and thousands of innocent victims of the hi-tech war on terror.

The future of Afghanistan, as depicted by Abbas, Eve Arnold, Luc Delahaye, Thomas Dworzak, Alex Majoli, Steve McCurry, and Francesco Zizola, remains uncertain at best.

Containing additional photographic work by Ian Berry, Elliott Erwitt, Stuart Franklin, Philip Jones Griffiths, Susan Meiselas, and Wayne Miller; commentary by the photographers; and several illustrated essays, Arms Against Fury will become an indispensable reference for documentary studies, social history, and critical photography.
