De auteurs zijn erin geslaagd een interessant boek samen te stellen, dat een rijke historische context verschaft voor het werk, onderwijs en onderzoek, in de faculteit. Het toont aan dat alle diepgaande discussies uit het verleden niet voor niets waren en maakt duidelijk dat de Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen Utrecht vitaal, springlevend en succesvol is en een beloftevolle toekomst heeft. Deze geschiedenis leert, dat wetenschap een eigen dynamiek kent, die niet maakbaar is in de zin van bestuurlijk maakbaar. Steeds meer beseffen lerarenopleiders dat zij een bijzonder beroep hebben: zij zijn de leraren van de leraren. Dit betekent dat lerarenopleiders niet alleen kennis van en ervaring met het onderwijzen (van hun vak) op school moeten hebben, maar dat zij ook kennis hebben van en ervaring met het opleiden van leraren.

In tegenstelling tot veel andere beroepsgroepen is er voor leraren-opleiders geen formele opleiding en bestaat er nauwelijks een kennis-basis. Wel zijn er in de afgelopen jaren tal van initiatieven genomen om lerarenopleiders te ondersteunen in hun professionele ontwikkeling. Dit boek probeert een bijdrage te leveren aan het vergroten van de kennisbasis van beginnende lerarenopleiders.

De onderwerpen van de hoofdstukken zijn actueel en gevarieerd, zoals de kenmerken van de lerarenopleiders; de ontwikkeling van leraren-in-opleiding; reflectie; de achtergrond en de praktijk van competentiegericht opleiden; opleiden in de school en het registratietraject voor lerarenopleiders.

Techniek is een politieke factor van belang. De HSL, de Joint Strike Fighter, de Noord-Zuid lijn, het elektronisch patiëntendossier, kernenergie, ondergrondse CO2-opslag, slimme elektriciteitsmeters, kabinetten en bewindspersonen kunnen er over struikelen, politieke partijen kunnen met hun standpunten op deze dossiers kiezers trekken of juist van zich vervreemden. Nieuwe technieken die gewenst leken, creëren soms onverwacht nieuwe problemen die om een politieke oplossing vragen, zoals het waarborgen van privacy in het elektronisch patiëntendossier, de verspreiding van kinderporno via internet of het beheersen van het risico van het transport van gevaarlijke stoffen. Tegelijk helpt techniek bij het oplossen van vele politieke problemen. Techniek is dus zowel deel van het politieke probleem als ook deel van de politieke oplossing.

In deze uitgave komt Femke Halsema - tot voor kort voorzitster van de Tweede Kamerfractie van Groen Links - zelf aan het woord. De onderwerpen in dit boek zijn thematisch gerangschikt, zoals de grondwet, vrijheid en emancipatie, het vrije woord, vrijheid van (on)geloof en een vrije pers. Het centrale uitgangspunt is steeds een optimale persoonlijke vrijheid zonder dat de gemeenschappelijke belangen geschaad worden. Zij noemt zich vrijzinnig-liberaal en verwerpt het conservatieve liberalisme. Met een verantwoording wordt het boek afgesloten.
