Het grote kwaad was nu het bolsjewisme, ideologie uit de Russische burgeroorlog, die vanaf 1917 stormenderhand het wereldtoneel veroverde. De geallieerde pogingen om de bolsjewistische dreiging binnen Rusland aan de bron te vernietigen, waren omstreden en bleven zonder succes: ze betekenden uiteindelijk vooral gratis propaganda voor de bolsjewieken in hun strijd tegen de westerse kapitalistische samenzwering. De schok van de Russische omwenteling deed zich al snel overal in de wereld voelen. In Duitsland, Hongarije en de Baltische staten braken bloedige revoluties en nog bloediger contrarevoluties uit; de rest van de wereld raakte verlamd door massale stakingen, rellen en terroristische bomaanslagen. Een golf van hysterie raakte wereldwijd aan de wortels van het ideaal van de vrije en democratische samenleving.

Het Engels heeft het Nederlands al bijna verdrongen aan de universiteiten en neemt sluipenderwijs het middelbaar en lager onderwijs over. Die wordt onderworpen aan het principe van de markt. Alwaar men het liefst in Engels jargon spreekt. Dit is een pamflet tegen de verengelsing van de wereld en een pleidooi voor diversiteit, te beginnen met het Nederlands.

Nederland werd in de eerste helft van de vorige eeuw uit haar zelfgenoegzaamheid wakker geschud in de moderne tijd. Lukte het tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog nog om een verzuilde maatschappij te beschermen tegen de grote wereld, de crisisjaren en moderne communicatie doorbraken het isolement. Moderne ideeën en middelen wonnen terrein. In Duitsland kwam het tot een nationalisme dat ook in Nederland leidde tot verwoesting en vervolging. In Nederlands-Indië kreeg het Indonesisch nationalisme steun in de rug van de Japanse bezetters.

The role played by ideology in the evolution of civilizations is being energetically debated by archaeologists, but until now the theoretical debates have had little impact on the actual interpretation of field data from Mesoamerica or South America. Studies on pre-Columbian ideology have generally used historical, ethnohistorical, and iconographic data to look synchronically at specific ancient religions. Little progress has been made in applying archaeological information to address the broader problem of the role of ideology in prehistoric culture change...
