In zeventien bijdragen schetsen moderne specialisten in dit vak leven en werk van een aantal van hun voorgangers. Wie de galerij van deze, chronologisch geordende, geschreven portretten van 'vak-vaders' langsloopt, ziet een beeld opdoemen van het ontstaan, de opkomst en de voortschrijdende professionalisering van de medioneerlandistiek.
