Vonne van der Meer werd in 1952 in Eindhoven geboren. Ze was het jongste kind in een gezin van drie. Haar moeder was een fanatieke lezer die haar kinderen veel en graag voorlas. De familie verhuisde naar Laren, waar Van der Meer na de lagere school de MMS bezocht. Omdat ze zich bij de lessen Nederlands onderscheidde bij het opstelschrijven mocht Van der Meer bij haar eindexamen verhalen inleveren. Na haar eindexamen ging ze een jaar naar een high school in de Verenigde Staten, waar haar liefde voor het toneel werd aangewakkerd door de acteerlessen die ze volgde.Twee jaar later werd ze toegelaten tot de regieafdeling van de Amsterdamse Theaterschool. Tijdens deze opleiding bleef ze eigen werk schrijven: verhalen, toneel, schetsen. Al snel werd ze de belangrijkste tekstleverancier van haar klas: Als er voor Koninginnedag een straattheaterstuk gemaakt moest worden, bewerkte ik in één nacht een sprookje. Als twee medeleerlingen een stuk zochten om samen aan te werken, maar niks konden vinden dat bij hun leeftijd en mogelijkheden paste, schreef ik het. Daar ontdekte ik ook dat het niet verstandig is je eigen werk te regisseren. De afstand ontbreekt dan. Als een scène niet meteen lukt, ben je geneigd meteen te gaan herschrijven, in plaats van de acteurs een andere opdracht te geven.”In 1976 werd Van der Meers monoloogDe behandelingdoor toneelgroep Centrum op het repertoire genomen. In 1978 sloot ze haar toneelopleiding af en werd regieassistent van Franz Marijnen bij het RO-theater. Al snel regisseerde ze zelf stukken van Goethe, Osborne, Frisch en een bewerking van Plato'sSymposium. Daarna regisseerde ze een kleine tien jaar bij uiteenlopende gezelschappen als Baal, Centrum, De Haagse Comedie en het RO-theater. Bij het laatste gezelschap ging in 1996 ook haar toneelstukWeiger nooit een dansin première.Van der Meers verzamelde verhalen uitHollands Maandbladwerden in 1987 gebundeld in haar debuut Het limonadegevoel,datprompt bekroond werd met de Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs. Daarna publiceerde ze gedurende meer dan 25 jaar en met grote regelmaat romans, verhalenbundels en novellen. De doorbraak naar het grote publiek kwam in 1999 met Eilandgasten,een roman-in-verhalen waarin we de tijdelijke bewoners van huize Duinroos leren kennen en de verhalen achter de berichten in het gastenboek.Met haar werk heeft Van der Meer zowel in binnen- als buitenland een groot lezerspubliek bereikt. In september 2013 is Het smalle pad van de liefde verschenen, een romanover een onmogelijke liefde die de weg vrijmaakt naar een ander verlangen.In het najaar van 2014 was zij twee maanden gastschrijver in Brussel, met een lesopdracht (proza schrijven) aan het Rits. Ook het komend jaar zal zij daar weer lesgeven.In oktober 2015 verschijnt Winter in Gloster Huis.
