A study of non-heterosexuality in art over the last five decades, Examines the work of approximately 140 artists from Europe. 50 years ago, in 1969, non-heterosexual residents of Amsterdam and New York took to the streets to campaign for their sexual, social, and legal rights. That year marked the start of the development of gay rights all over the world, which in many countries has now culminated in the introduction of same-sex marriage. Since the 1960s, artists all over the world have regularly taken homosexuality as the subject of their work, in a range of different ways. Queer in Art is the first book to place the development of this art in a broad European context. The book focuses on male homosexuality and queer performances, and offers a chronological look at the past five decades. Text in English and Dutch.

Waar moet je op letten, als je een kunstwerk koopt? Hedendaagse beeldende kunst is vaak nog niet in kunsthistorische termen te vatten, maar er valt veel te zeggen over gebruikte materialen en technieken. Uitzonderlijke portretten door een uitzonderlijke kunstenares

De tentoonstelling Russia XXI toont een overzicht van de moderne en hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst uit Rusland. In samenwerking met het National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) te Moskou, is een keuze van 37 kunstenaars, duo's en groepen gemaakt, die hun werk o.a. op het Lange Voorhout te Den Haag en in museum Beelden aan Zee zullen tonen. Het leeuwendeel van het werk is afkomstig uit Moskou. De tentoonstelling bevat werk uit de tumultueuze periode van na 1989 en toont de ontwikkelingen van de beeldhouwkunst tot nu toe. De Russische beeldhouwkunst houdt zich bezig met de eigen maatschappij, de wisseling van politieke en economische systemen, en het tegelijk beroemde en beruchte kunsthistorische verleden. The first major exhibition to explore the influence of the Symbolist movement on Australian art at the turn of the 19th century. Rather than representing the real world, Symbolist artists sought to suggest altered realities as conjured by the mind. To evoke ideas, dreams and sensations, they envisaged poetic landscapes, femmes fatales, and figures drawn from spiritual and mythological terrains. The movement had an enormous impact across Europe in the late 1800s. While Australian painting from the period is best known for landscapes, figures of fantasy and mythology were an increasing presence. Australian Symbolism: the art of dreams brings together some 70 paintings, sculptures, photographs and decorative arts objects by expatriate Australians working in Europe and by artists here who used Symbolist themes to define Australian conditions. The exhibition features works by some of the era's most admired artists, including Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Rupert Bunny, Bertram Mackennal and George Lambert - some rarely seen. It also investigates the crossover between Symbolist subjects and art nouveau style in Australia, including two seminal works by Sydney Long, the country's best-known exponent of art nouveau painting.--www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au.

'In de schaduw van morgen' is de reconstructie van de spraakmakende tentoonstelling 'De bange jaren dertig' die in de beginjaren van de Koude Oorlog in het toenmalige Gemeentemuseum Arnhem (nu MMKA) werd gehouden. Bijzonder aan deze tentoonstelling was dat het wereldgebeuren van de jaren dertig als uitgangspunt werd genomen voor een exposé over een op dat moment - ten tijde van COBRA - omstreden stroming uit de Nederlandse kunstgeschiedenis. Het boek verschijnt ter gelegenheid van de reconstructie van de tentoonstelling in het Museum van Moderne Kunst Arnhem. Balthus’s lifelong curiosity with the ambiguities and dark side of childhood resulted in his best-known and most iconic works. Alfons Mucha is known largely for having originated Art Nouveau, when his poster of the actress Sarah Bernhardt became a legendary icon of the movement. Mucha went on to design hundreds of pieces in the decorative arts field, but later distanced himself from the style he pioneered, devoting his time and energy to painting. Empire of Ecstasy offers a novel interpretation of the explosion of German body culture between the two wars--nudism and nude dancing, gymnastics and dance training, dance photography and criticism, and diverse genres of performance from solo dancing to mass movement choirs. Karl Toepfer presents this dynamic subject as a vital and historically unique construction of "modern identity."

The modern body, radiating freedom and power, appeared to Weimar artists and intelligentsia to be the source of a transgressive energy, as well as the sign and manifestation of powerful, mysterious "inner" conditions. Toepfer shows how this view of the modern body sought to extend the aesthetic experience beyond the boundaries imposed by rationalized life and to transcend these limits in search of ecstasy. With the help of much unpublished or long-forgotten archival material (including many little-known photographs), he investigates the process of constructing an "empire" of appropriative impulses toward ecstasy.

Toepfer presents the work of such well-known figures as Rudolf Laban, Mary Wigman, and Oskar Schlemmer, along with less-known but equally fascinating body culture practitioners. His book is certain to become required reading for historians of dance, body culture, and modernism.
