-Facing Fear is the first time the sculptures of Lynn Chadwick and Alberto Giacometti have ever been explicitly compared and contrasted In 1956, Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003) won the International Sculpture Prize at the Venice Biennale. The youngest artist ever to receive the prize, this British sculptor had begun his career only six years earlier. The runners-up included Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), who was then already a renowned artist and the overwhelming favorite to win. Yet the question of which one received the prize - Giacometti won shortly afterwards, in 1962 - is less significant than the fact that both of them were nominated for it. Each of the two represented, in his own way, the confusion and disillusionment that prevailed in Cold War Europe. For Giacometti, these tensions set off a deep existential crisis that led to a radical shift in his work. His string-like forms, now well known, literally pare down the human being to his essence. In that same period, Chadwick's constructivist figures were described as 'the geometry of fear', a desperate cry expressing the sense of menace that had the artist and his contemporaries in a stranglehold.

Kuniyoshi The Faithful Samurai is a pioneering publication which deals with the most famous series - the Seichū gishi den (1847-48) and its sequel the Seichū gishin den (1848) - of the forty-seven masterless samurai (rōnin) by artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861). The true 18th-century tale of revenge by forty-seven rōnin for the death of their lord was enormously popular in Japan: it was dramatised for the Kabuki theatre and its heroes were often depicted in ukiyo-e prints. Kuniyoshi was a master in the genre of warrior prints, and his series expressively portrays these warrior 'folk heroes'. Dr. Weinberg's book also includes translations of the texts which appear on the prints and which recount each hero's exploits. In addition, there are photographs of the relics of the masterless samurai and the ruins of their castle in Akō.

Het Getijdenboek van Katharina van Kleef is een uit de vroege 15e eeuw daterend rijkgeïllustreerd getijdenboek dat toebehoorde aan Katharina van Kleef. Het werd in opdracht van haar echtgenoot Arnold van Egmont of haar vader Adolf IV van Kleef-Mark rond 1440 vervaardigd door een tot op heden niet-geïdentificeerde Nederlandse kunstenaar, die bekendstaat als de Meester van Katharina van Kleef.Het manuscript wordt beschouwd als het beste wat de Noord-Nederlandse boekverluchting heeft voortgebracht en is een topstuk op het gebied van de middeleeuwse miniatuurkunst. Het bevindt zich momenteel in twee delen in het Morgan Library and Museum in New York als de manuscripten M. 917 en M. 945. Dit laatste staat ook bekend als de Guennol Hours of ook wel de Arenberg Hours. Het werk is vermoedelijk in de 19e eeuw door een handelaar in twee delen gesplitst en door hem als opzichzelfstaande werken verkocht. De Morgan Library wist in 1963 en 1970 de beide delen, afkomstig uit privéverzamelingen, te verwerven. Een aantal miniaturen, mogelijk elf, zijn verloren gegaan. Vermoed wordt dat deze ooit zijn losgesneden en als aparte kunstwerken zijn doorverkocht.

A study of non-heterosexuality in art over the last five decades, Examines the work of approximately 140 artists from Europe. 50 years ago, in 1969, non-heterosexual residents of Amsterdam and New York took to the streets to campaign for their sexual, social, and legal rights. That year marked the start of the development of gay rights all over the world, which in many countries has now culminated in the introduction of same-sex marriage. Since the 1960s, artists all over the world have regularly taken homosexuality as the subject of their work, in a range of different ways. Queer in Art is the first book to place the development of this art in a broad European context. The book focuses on male homosexuality and queer performances, and offers a chronological look at the past five decades. Text in English and Dutch.

Uitzonderlijke portretten door een uitzonderlijke kunstenares

De tentoonstelling Russia XXI toont een overzicht van de moderne en hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst uit Rusland. In samenwerking met het National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) te Moskou, is een keuze van 37 kunstenaars, duo's en groepen gemaakt, die hun werk o.a. op het Lange Voorhout te Den Haag en in museum Beelden aan Zee zullen tonen. Het leeuwendeel van het werk is afkomstig uit Moskou. De tentoonstelling bevat werk uit de tumultueuze periode van na 1989 en toont de ontwikkelingen van de beeldhouwkunst tot nu toe. De Russische beeldhouwkunst houdt zich bezig met de eigen maatschappij, de wisseling van politieke en economische systemen, en het tegelijk beroemde en beruchte kunsthistorische verleden. The first major exhibition to explore the influence of the Symbolist movement on Australian art at the turn of the 19th century. Rather than representing the real world, Symbolist artists sought to suggest altered realities as conjured by the mind. To evoke ideas, dreams and sensations, they envisaged poetic landscapes, femmes fatales, and figures drawn from spiritual and mythological terrains. The movement had an enormous impact across Europe in the late 1800s. While Australian painting from the period is best known for landscapes, figures of fantasy and mythology were an increasing presence. Australian Symbolism: the art of dreams brings together some 70 paintings, sculptures, photographs and decorative arts objects by expatriate Australians working in Europe and by artists here who used Symbolist themes to define Australian conditions. The exhibition features works by some of the era's most admired artists, including Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Rupert Bunny, Bertram Mackennal and George Lambert - some rarely seen. Title was originally announced as a WBOOKS publication (9789040007828). 'In de schaduw van morgen' is de reconstructie van de spraakmakende tentoonstelling 'De bange jaren dertig' die in de beginjaren van de Koude Oorlog in het toenmalige Gemeentemuseum Arnhem (nu MMKA) werd gehouden. Bijzonder aan deze tentoonstelling was dat het wereldgebeuren van de jaren dertig als uitgangspunt werd genomen voor een exposé over een op dat moment - ten tijde van COBRA - omstreden stroming uit de Nederlandse kunstgeschiedenis. Het boek verschijnt ter gelegenheid van de reconstructie van de tentoonstelling in het Museum van Moderne Kunst Arnhem. Balthus’s lifelong curiosity with the ambiguities and dark side of childhood resulted in his best-known and most iconic works. In these pictures, Balthus (1908-2001) mingles intuition into his young sitters’ psyches with overt erotic desire and forbidding austerity, making them among the most powerful depictions of childhood and adolescence ever committed to canvas. Often included in these scenes are enigmatic cats, possible stand-ins for the artist himself.

Balthus: Cats and Girls is the first book devoted to this subject, focusing on the early decades of the artist’s career from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. Drawing on extensive knowledge of the artist’s life and work, as well as on interviews with Balthus and the models themselves, Sabine Rewald explores the origins and permutations of Balthus’s obsessions with adolescents and felines. She addresses the crucial influence of such key figures as poet Rainer Maria Rilke, his mother’s lover, who acted as Balthus’s surrogate father, but also includes the previously unknown voices of the girl models: their recollections and comments provide a unique perspective on some of the best known and most controversial paintings of the 20th century.
