Contradicting the long-held belief that Aristotle was the first to discuss individuation systematically, Mary Margaret McCabe argues that Plato was concerned with what makes something a something and that he solved the problem in a radically different way than did Aristotle. McCabe explores the centrality of individuation to Plato's thinking, from the Parmenides to the Politicus, illuminating Plato's later metaphysics in an exciting new way.

Tradition associates Plato with the contrast between the particulars of the sensible world and transcendent forms, and supposes that therein lies the center of Plato's metaphysical universe. McCabe rebuts this view, arguing that Plato's thinking about individuals--which informs all his thought--comes to focus on the tension between "generous" or complex individuals and "austere" or simple individuals. In dialogues such as the Theaetetus and the Timaeus Plato repeatedly poses the question of individuation but cannot provide an answer. Later, in the Sophist, the Philebus, and the Politicus, Plato devises what McCabe calls the "mesh of identity," an account of how individuals may be identified relative to each other. The mesh of identity, however, fails to explain satisfactorily how individuals are unified or made coherent. McCabe asserts that individuation may be absolute--and she questions philosophy's longtime reliance on Aristotle's solution.

Geluk is in onze moderne tijd een dure plicht geworden. We gaan ervan uit, dat geluk te realiseren is, dat het goed is om plezier in het leven te hebben en dat men pijn het beste kan proberen te vermijden. De vraag is, of we daar gelukkiger van worden. Hoe komen we aan de overtuiging dat we gelukkig moeten zijn? Waarom en sinds wanneer neemt het begrip 'geluk' zo'n belangrijke plaats in onze gedachten? Wanneer werd het najagen van geluk een recht, zelfs een morele plicht, zodat je je haast schuldig moet voelen als je niet gelukkig bent?
Geluk. Een geschiedenis geeft antwoord op al deze vragen. De Amerikaanse historicus Darrin McMahon onderwerpt de Westerse obsessie voor geluk aan een onderzoek en laat zien dat de zoektocht naar het persoonlijk geluk een moderne uitvinding is, met een rijk verleden. McMahon gaat te rade bij antieke en klassieke denkers en houdt christelijke begrippen als Lot en Zondeval onder de loep. Het geluksdenken kwam op in de Verlichting. In die periode stelden filosofen voor het eerst dat het najagen van geluk het voornaamste doel van de mens is. Dat was een heel radicale stelling, voor die tijd ging men er van uit dat een sterveling geen invloed heeft op zijn eigen welbevinden; alles was immers afhankelijk van het lot, of van een god. Of, zoals het in de Griekse oudheid werd gesteld: noem niemand gelukkig, totdat hij dood is. Ook Augustinus stelde dat ons streven naar geluk tevergeefs is vanwege de zondeval. Het ware geluk zou pas na de dood te vinden zijn. De Verlichtingsfilosofen braken radicaal met deze denkwijze door geluk te beschouwen als een universeel recht: hét criterium om alle menselijke ervaringen aan af te meten.
