De Digha-Nikaya ('Lange verzameling') bevat de verzameling van lange leerredes die aan de Boeddha worden toegeschreven. Dit boekt vormt samen met vier andere 'verzamelingen' de Sutta-Pitaka ('Mand der Leerredes') van de Pali-Canon, de enige volledig bewaard gebleven Canon van het vroege boeddhisme. Dit omvangrijke werk bevat de oudste teksten van het boeddhisme en benadert - ondanks vele latere uitwerkingen en toevoegingen - de kern van de Leer van de Boedha zo dicht mogelijk.

Een brontekst als de Digha-Nikaya, die nu voor het eerst integraal en rechtstreeks vanuit het Pali in het Nederlands is vertaald, is voor iedereen met interesse in boeddhisme uitermate belangrijk, omdat veel secundaire literatuur pas begrijpelijk wordt wanneer men kennis genomen heeft van de klassieke teksten, die, naast de mondelinge traditie, nog steeds de basis vormen voor de boeddhistische praktijk.

Een geschrift als de Digha-Nikaya dient niet opgevat te worden als een 'onfeilbare waarheid', maar dient veeleer aanleiding te zijn tot bezinning en kritische reflectie. De tekst leent zich vanwege het ritmische proza tevens voor recitatie in groepsverband. Ongetwijfeld is dit oude geschrift ook voor de moderne lezer een bron van inspiratie.

De vertaling wordt voorafgegaan door een algemene inleiding in het vroege boeddhisme, die de lezer vertrouwd maakt met het levensverhaal van de Boeddha en de belangrijkste elementen van zijn Leer, waaronder de oude meditatievormen.

Deze nieuwe Nederlandse vertaling van het eeuwenoude boek is zeer aantrekkelijk vormgegeven. Het is geschreven in een toegankelijke taal, die zowel recht doet aan de directe stijl als aan de spirituele inhoud van het Griekse origineel. Het geheel is geïllustreerd door de Nederlandse kunstenaares Sonia van der Klift. Het bestaat uit 27 geschriften, die in de eerste en het begin van de tweede eeuw na Christus in het Grieks werden geschreven. Het boek begint met de Evangeliën, 4 verschillende verhalen over de komst van Jezus van Nazareth in Palestina. Vervolgens beschrijft het handelingen van de apostelen en hoe er na Jezus' kruisdood en opstanding een beweging ontstond die zich geleidelijk uitbreidde, via Klein-Azië en Griekenland tot aan de keizer van Rome, het toenmalige centrum van de macht.  Daarna volgen 21 brieven van verschillende apostelen, die zij schreven aan de eerste christelijke gemeenschappen. Het boek eindigt in de Openbaring van Johannes met een blik in de toekomst.
