Een goede plattegrond, waarin de ouge en de nieuwe situatie zo herkenbaar mogelijk door elkaar afgebeeld worden, is een belangrijke reisleider.

Iran trad geleidelijk uit zijn isolement (helaas is dat door de oorlog weer tenietgedaan) en liet sporadisch reizigers op zijn grondgebied toe. De intieme, oriëntaalse sfeer van enkele eeuwen verfijnde Perzische traditie nodigt uit om op zoek te gaan naar het oude Perzië met zijn indrukwekkende archeologische vindplaatsen, steden en landschappen. Rustige kleidorpen en bruisende steden met hoge gebouwen wisselen elkaar af, en rijstvelden, vruchtbare gronden, desolate woestijngebieden met uitgedroogde zoutmeren en bergketens met besneeuwde toppen, onderbroken door hoogvlakten, liggen vredig naast elkaar. Het landschap onthult religieuze monumenten die bekoren door de schitterende kleuren en de ranke, naar de hemel wijzende minaretten, het oneindige — voor eeuwig. De prachtige keramiektegels spiegelen zich in de zon en geven de mooiste schakeringen van blauw, turkoois en geel. Je kunt je fantasie de vrije loop laten bij de aanblik van het indrukwekkende Persepolis en de ontroerende schoonheid ondergaan van het schitterende Isfahan. De smeltkroes van verschillende etnische en religieuze minderheden levert mooie ontmoetingen op voor de aandachtige bezoeker.

Dominicus over een land vol tegenstrijdigheden. Eeuwenoude culturele bezienswaardigheden, subtropische badplaatsen en spectaculaire bergtoppen. Er is waarschijnlijk geen land ter wereld met zo'n grote verscheidenheid aan toeristische bestemmingen als Rusland. Dominicus vond het daarom tijd voor een complete Rusland-reisgids, de eerste van eigen bodem in meer dan tien jaar tijd. LHTB'ers uit de hele wereld strijken in de maand augustus massaal in Amsterdam neer voor de Gay Pride, de Drag Queen Olympics en de Hartjesdagen. De regenboogvlag gaat uit en tijdens de botenparade is iedereen 'pretty in pink'. De feestmaand is pas voorbij nadat extravagant uitgedoste drag queens over de Zeedijk hebben geparadeerd tijdens het eeuwenoude volksfeest Hartjesdag. Fotografe Shirley Agudo raakte gefascineerd door deze uitbundige en vrijgevochten manifestaties. Ze fotografeerde jarenlang de bezoekers van de festiviteiten en toont in het tweetalige boek 'Amsterdam Streethearts' hun flamboyante uitdossingen. Backstage mocht zij ook van dichtbij het proces van de transformatie volgen en dat zien we hier voor het eerst in boekvorm.

"Ze zijn op de vingers van één hand te tellen, de sportieve evenementen van wereldklasse die ontstonden eind negentiende, begin twintigste eeuw en nu nog elk jaar plaatsvinden: Milaan-San Remo, De Ronde van Vlaanderen, Parijs-Roubaix, Luik-Bastenaken-Luik, De Ronde van Lombardije. Philippe Vandenbergh volgt als journalist van 'La Libre Belgique' al meer dan een kwarteeuw de grote wielerklassiekers op de voet. Hij heeft een passie voor klassementen, omdat hij vindt dat de overwinning van een 23ste Ronde van Vlaanderen evenveel waard is als de 100ste"--Page 4 of cover.

Willem Frederik Hermans koesterde een grote belangstelling voor de kunst en het ambacht van de fotografie. Decennialang was hij zelf actief als fotograaf en ook schreef hij geregeld over het onderwerp. Hermans had daarnaast een voorliefde voor de collagetechniek. Hij knipte illustraties uit tijdschriften en kranten om er, vaak in combinatie met eigen foto's, absurdistische collages van te maken. Hoewel hij maar spaarzaam foto's en collages publiceerde, verschenen er in de laatste jaren van Hermans' schrijverschap toch drie titels waarin dergelijk beeldend werk was verzameld: 'Koningin Eenoog' (1986), dat een keuze uit zijn foto's uit de periode 1948-1985 bevatte, 'Het hoedenparadijs' (1991), een selectie van zijn collages, en de bijzondere fotokaartenset 'Een foto uit eigen doos!' (1994). In dit achttiende deel van de 'Volledige Werken' zijn deze titels voor het eerst in één band bijeengebracht. Het deel opent met 'Fotobiografie' (1969), Hermans' autobiografie in foto's en documenten.

"This publication accompanies Fondation Beyeler?s survey on the great photographic innovator Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968). Tillmans first made a name for himself in the early 1990s, with photographs that captured an entire generation and a youth culture of which he was part, and which are now iconic images of that era. However, he quickly expanded his focus, creating works with and without a camera, producing photographs printed as C-prints on photographic paper, as inkjet prints on paper, or as photocopies. Some of these photographs acquire a sculptural, objectlike quality. Tillmans has also developed new compositional and formal, anti-hierarchical ways of installing his pictures in spaces. This substantial volume offers a comprehensive overview of his achievements."

The photographs that Chris Killip (born 1946) took in Northern England between 1973 and 1985 were first published by Secker & Warburg as In Flagrante in 1988, a volume that quickly established itself as the most important 1980s photobook on England and a classic of the genre. Compassionate but unwavering in its gaze, In Flagrante documented industrial Northern England in decline, suffering from the aftershocks of neoliberal economic strategies most brutally embodied in the policies of Margaret Thatcher. "The objective history of England doesn't amount to much if you don't believe in it, and I don't," reflects Killip. "And I don't believe that anyone in these photographs does either, as they face the reality of deindustrialization in a system which regards their lives as disposable."
Chris Killip: In Flagrante Two revisits the classic photobook with a beautifully produced, radically updated presentation: each double-page spread features a single image on the right side. Strident in its belief in the primacy and power of the photographic image, In Flagrante Two allows for and embraces ambiguities and contradictions arising from the unadorned narrative sequence, completely devoid of text--forcing viewers to truly look, to witness.

This publication highlights over 70 hidden gems from the Wingender collection, one of the most comprehensive collections of Dutch photobooks today. Since 1956 Jan Wingender accumulated 7000 photobooks, ranging from the 19th century to now. The collection comprises sought-after artist books by such photographers as Ed van der Elsken and Eva Besnyö, as well as rare vernacular publications such as photographically illustrated company books, schoolbooks, and political pamphlets. As such it offers an overview of a rapidly transforming visual culture in the Netherlands, and makes the development of applied Dutch photography insightful. The collection was acquired by the Nederlands Fotomuseum in 2013.

Walker Evans's radical photography of the 1930s demonstrated that unembellished photographic fact could serve as a highly poetic language. These works expanded the potential of the art of photography and at the same time defined a lasting iconography that recognized advertising, movies, and car culture as central images of modern American identity. Published in conjunction with the second of three cycles of millennial exhibitions (MoMA2000) at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, this book focuses on Evans as a central figure in the arts of the 1920s and 1930s.

Eve Arnold, born in 1912 to Russian immigrant parents in Philadelphia, died in London in 2012 shortly before her 100th birthday. One of the great women photographers of the 20th century, Eve Arnold joined the legendary Magnum agency in 1951 and became its first full female member in 1957. Published in honor of her 100th birthday and in memory of the grande dame of photojournalism, this lavishly illustrated monograph is a collection of Eve Arnold's most famous photo documentaries. Accompanied by her commentaries, these include New York by Night, Fashion Shows in Harlem (1950), A Baby's Momentous First Five Minutes, Haiti Voodoo, and Malcolm X, as well as her travel photographs from Afghanistan (from the late 60s), China and India (circa 1980), and her legendary portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Isabella Rossellini, Clark Gable, Peter O'Toole, and Anthony Quinn.

Robert Mapplethorpe's wide, provocative and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. The American photographer is mostly known for images that simultaneously challenge and adhere to classical aesthetic standards: stylised compositions of male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes and studio portraits of artists and celebrities, to list a few of his preferred genres. Since 1977 Germano Celant has come in contact with Robert Mapplethorpe, realising interviews and writing essays on the occasion of several publications and exhibitions. For the first time, this volume gathers the complete anthology of Celant's writings on the artist: from the 1983 exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, projected with the collaboration of the artist himself, to the posthumous writings published in the catalogues prepared on the occasion of the exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg since 1990. This book, through over 140 images and texts that appear both personal and scientific, aims to pay tribute to Robert Mapplethorpe's contribution to the history of photography.
