Our age is obsessed by the idea of conspiracy. We see it everywhere - from Pearl Harbour to 9/11, from the assassination of Kennedy to the death of Diana. In de afgelopen 5O jaar heeft Pieter d'Hont een grote reputatie verworven als een veelzijdig en productief kunstenaar. Enerzijds is hij de ambachtelijke beeldhouwer die, zoals zijn middeleeuwse voorgangers, zich geheel in dienst heeft gesteld van de gemeenschap, anderzijds is hij de moderne, 'vrije' kunstenaar die zijn werk pas aflevert als het naar zijn inzicht voldragen is. Pieter d'Hont behoort tot de generatie beeldhouwers die, gevormd in de klas van Jan Bronner, tot wasdom kwam in de naoorlogse jaren waarin het groeiend aantal openbare opdrachten de voorwaarde schiep voor een bloei van de Nederlandse beeldhouwkunst. Aanvankelijk stond hij onder invloed van het moderne classicisme van Aristide Maillol en Charles Despiau, gevolgd door de meer impressionistische monumentaliteit van beeldhouwers als Rik Wouters en Mari Andriessen. Een monumentale en toch ingetogen vormexpressie, waarin het evenwicht is nagestreefd tussen het verheven menselijke en het menselijke verhevene is de karakteristiek van de beeldhouwkunst van Pieter d'Hont. Hij behoort daarmee tot een van de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de figuratieve traditie in de Nederlandse beeldhouwkunst.

Jan A. Niemeijer vult deze lacune in Jetses' werk met dit fraaie en kleurrijke overzicht over de beroemde illustrator als sprookjestekenaar. Het staat onomstotelijk vast dat men nog steeds niet is uitgekeken op het werk van Cornelis Jetses (1873-1955). Aan zijn verfijnde tekeningen en aquarellen voegde hij een bijzondere dimensie toe, waardoor ze ook nu nog boeien en fascineren. Wat ook in zijn sprookjesprenten opvalt, is zijn uitstekende compositievermogen en de knappe verdeling van de objecten over het vlak. Zijn aquarellen zijn prachtig transparant, zodat de donkerste partijen nog doorzichtig blijven en de helderste kleuren warm en feestelijk opbloeien. In zijn illustraties paart hij monumentaliteit aan speelse beweeglijkheid. Altijd ademen zijn tekeningen sfeer.
