De bekende schaakjournalist Berry Withuis (1920-2009) werd grootgebracht in een gereformeerd gezin. Als twaalfjarige raakte hij zijn geloof in God kwijt. Later werd hij communist en redacteur van het dagblad 'De Waarheid'. Zijn dochter Jolande (1949) groeide op met haar vaders politieke overtuiging, maar ontwikkelde zich als volwassene tot een vermaard critica van het communisme. Die breuk met haar afkomst opende voor Withuis de weg naar het schrijverschap en de wetenschap, maar leidde tegelijkertijd tot een verwijdering tussen haar en haar vader. Na zijn dood kon ze zich er niet bij neerleggen dat de man die zij als kind had vereerd, zich als persoon nauwelijks had laten kennen. Met behulp van onder meer zijn BVD-dossier reconstrueert ze in Raadselvader zijn levensgeschiedenis. Withuis' scherpe en ontroerende ontleding van de verhouding tot haar vader weerspiegelt onze recente wereldgeschiedenis en biedt de lezer een blik van binnenuit op de Koude Oorlog: "Ik was vijf en wist: wij zijn de vijand."

De Denker des Vaderlands, René Gude, is stervende. Voor Human sprak Wim Brands met hem over wat er werkelijk toe doet in het leven, over humeurmanagement en over de troost van de filosofie. Juist nu de dood voor de deur staat, blijken filosofische vaardigheden handig om de gemoedsrust te bewaren. Als je goed over de inrichting van je leven hebt nagedacht, hoef je op het eind niet nog van alles goed te maken. Wie een beetje nadenkt hoeft zich ook niet te verliezen in bozige theorietjes over het bittere lot dat je treft. Natuurlijk dat soort sombere emoties zijn er wel, maar je kunt leren om ze niet kunstmatig, door verkeerd gebruik van je verstand, te verlengen.
En wat het sterven zelf betreft: dat moet toch tamelijk eenvoudig zijn. Tot nu toe is het iedereen gelukt.

Het is maar weinigen gegeven om zo treffend naar de achterblijvers te zwaaien als Albert de Lange deed in zijn columns in Het Parool. Als krantenlezer denk je: hoe lang kan dit goed gaan? Want we zijn wel op weg naar Zorgvlied. De ontknoping is duidelijk, maar hoeveel zijpaden bestaan er voordat je bij het graf beland bent? De auteurs belichten in dit uitermate nuttige en interessante boek de onverwachte kanten van (bekende) planten Iedereen kent natuurlijk planten, struiken en bomen als madeliefje, pinksterbloem, lijsterbes en tamme kastanje, maar lang niet iedereen weet dat deze planten bestanddelen bezitten met een geneeskrachtige werking, laat staan welke die is. In onbekende kanten van bekende planten nu sommen de auteurs per maand een aantal voor die tijd typerende planten op, die iedereen in of vlakbij zijn tuin zal kunnen aantreffen en informeren de lezer op een heldere en interessante wijze over hun geneeskrachtige werking. Van elke behandelde plant is bovendien een duidelijke illustratie opgenomen en is de tekst aangevuld met gemakkelijk zelf te bereiden recepten.

Ooit was de dagelijkse douche een wekelijkse teil, de bankrekening een papieren loonzakje, de tampon een gordeltje met inlegdoekje en de verwarming een stoffige kolenkachel. Dingen die wij nu volstrekt normaal vinden waren dat kort geleden nog niet. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog maakte Nederland iets mee dat nooit eerder was vertoond: het inkomen per hoofd van de bevolking verviervoudigde. In dit boek beschrijft Annegreet van Bergen hoe deze ongekende en razend- snelle groei ons dagelijks leven ingrijpend heeft veranderd van eten, wonen en huishouden tot school, werk en mobiliteit. Fantastische anekdotes, scherpe observaties, uitgebreid onderzoek en opmerkelijke cijfers vormen de basis van dit bijzondere geschiedenisboek. Het doet je beseffen hoe uitzonderlijk rijk we in een halve eeuw tijd zijn geworden en hoe betrekkelijk de huidige economische malaise is.

De dorpen Neder- en Overlangbroek, samen vormende de huidige gemeente Langbroek, zijn historisch gezien al erg oud. De eerste vermelding dateert al uit het jaar 1289 en betreft Overlangbroek. De uitgevoerde inventarisatie van monumenten en andere historische waardevolle gebouwen is aanleiding geweest wat dieper in te gaan op die geschiedenis. De gemeente is rijkelijk bedeeld met kastelen en andere waardevolle bebouwing, terwijl het agrarisch gebied van grote landschappelijke natuurwetenschappelijke en cultuurhistorische betekenis is. Het is dan ook verheugend, dat al deze elementen thans in aantrekkelijke en overzichtelijke vorm toegankelijk zijn gemaakt voor iedere belangstellende. Ik heb de overtuiging, dat deze uitgave tegemoet komt aan de belangstelling voor dit onderwerp, die zowel binnen als buiten de gemeente aanwezig is. De samenstellers van dit boek, mevrouw S. van Ginkel-Meester en de heer M. Kooiman, zijn erin geslaagd een boeiend inzicht te geven in het verleden van de gemeente Langbroek. Het boek moge een leidraad zijn voor allen die hierin geïnteresseerd zijn.
