All sectors of the Dutch infrastructures have undergone a degree of commercialisation, liberalisation or privatisation over the last ten to twenty years. Where in the past the infrastructure landscape was dominated by public monopolies, the ownership and management of infrastructures is today shared by several public and private sector players. The original goals of this 'regime change' have in many cases been achieved: greater efficiency, a greater focus on the customer and more choice for consumers. The question is whether this emphasis on current consumer interests allows enough scope to achieve long-term objectives which affect the whole of our society: innovation, long-term availability and sustainability of infrastructures. This is of crucial importance for economic and social development, which is coming under increasing pressure due to the combined impact of the exhaustion of natural resources and climate change. The transition to a sustainable future demands substantial investment in infrastructures, which cannot be taken for granted in the present situation. The WRR has investigated how these investments could be safeguarded in the long term, whilst retaining the efficiency of the infrastructures.

Susanne Kriemann's ONE DAY is the third book in a series of portraits, in book form, of the City of Rotterdam, that Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art has been producing in collaboration with artists who are particularly concerned with photographic medium. Kriemann is an artist whose work explores how images circulate and how displacement is represented in photography. For this project Kriemann collected a long list of books about Rotterdam, all of which have been published since its devastating bombing by the Luftwaffe in May 1940. The second largest city in The Netherlands and arguably the most culturally diverse, Rotterdam is unique in that its rebuilding did not focus on restoring the pre-war urban fabric, but instead became a multi-faceted experiment in architecture and urban planning. From the books she collected, which document Rotterdam's evolution, Kriemann selected 115 images and imposed a structure that is at once drastic and mundane. The flow of images in her book condense the experience of time by subtly tracing the course of one day, from dawn until dusk. We live in a world of brands. Brands play a crucial role in business competition, but have also become an important social phenomenon. Brands are represented by signs and symbols, gestures and images. They stand for values, hopes, and desires, for experiences and expectations. They evoke emotions and associations. "Branding From A to Z" is a purely visual crash course in the essence and impact of brands, alphabetically pairing symbols with images, so that the "C" of Campbell's Soup is paired with a photograph of Che Guevara; the "D" of Disney with a whimsical portrait of Salvador Dal'; the sign for the Euro with Albert Einstein's mug; McDonald's Golden Arches with Marilyn Monroe, skirt aflutter over a gusting grate; the royal blue "Q" of Q-Tips with the even more royal Queen Elizabeth II; and all the way to the swishy "Z" of Zurich Insurance, paired with Frank Zappa, who sits quizzically upon a toilet.

Brands identify products and services. Yet a brand is much more than a "brand name" or a "brand logo" on a "brand-name product." Brands reflect individual and collective desires that go far beyond a product's utilitarian benefit. Brands are found in every business and in every market. The sense of fascination they evoke is the key to the success of such brands. "Brands & Desires" presents 25 vivid examples of the link between brands and desires, beginning with The Rolling Stones (desire: coolness), and continuing on to include Apple computers (religion), De Beers diamonds (fidelity), Ikea furnishings (growing up), Freitag bags (individuality), Marlborough cigarettes (freedom), Benetton clothing (justice), Red Bull soft drink (action) and Greenpeace (resistance).
