In the first academic book to describe the life of poor Jews in Amsterdam between the two world wars, We Lived with Dignity captures in poignant detail the unique qualities of that city's Jewish ghetto before Hitler's reign of terror. Interviews with more than ninety survivors who shared memories of living conditions in the ghetto and their feelings about the tremendous changes they lived through create an oral history that has not previously been recorded in formal descriptions and archives. The research in this book raises questions and challenges assumptions about what the past was like and how it can be portrayed. Selma Leydesdorff suggests that oral history may not always be an accurate measure. Because memories about the period before the war are veiled by the massive slaughter of the Jews by the Germans, survivors often idealize their circumstances, burying under layers of romantic nostalgia the reality of hunger, poor housing, poverty and filth, unemployment, and a lack of social stability - precisely of the sort depicted in present-day literature about the old Jewish quarter. She found that the processing of practically every interview, every "fact", involved a struggle between reality, distortion, and myth. We Lived with Dignity contains more than people's stories. Leydesdorff confirms events, exposes the truth, and explains distortions by reference to other material. To bring order into the world she hears about, she frames her interviews with critical information including a summary of the historical, economic, and demographic relationships within which the Amsterdam Jewish proletariat lived; an explanation of the changes in living conditions and the conscious attempts thatwere made to help the Jews - a cultural and religious minority - adapt to what was regarded as "modern" or "progressive"; and a description of the culture of poverty, the strategies for survival that characterized it, and the apparent impossibility of escaping it. Of the 140,000 Jews living in the Netherlands in 1941, eighty percent died during World War II. Although there are no exact figures, it is generally assumed that the slaughter was worst among the proletariat. The devastation can be seen from the fact that there is no Jewish proletarian culture left at all. In this sense, Leydesdorff's study of the history of the Jewish proletariat of Amsterdam is also a study of the consequences of World War II, and of the nature of the destruction brought about by the Holocaust.

In his now classic Two Powers in Heaven, Alan Segal examines rabbinic evidence about early manifestations of the "two powers" heresy within Judaism. Segal sheds light upon the development of and relationships among early Christianity, Gnosticism, and Merkabah mysticism and demonstrates that belief in the "two powers in heaven" was widespread by the first century, and may have been a catalyst for the Jewish rejection of early Christianity. An important addition to New Testament and Gnostic scholarship by this much revered scholar, Segal's Two Powers in Heaven is made available once again for a new generation.

The Body of Faith offers an understanding of Judaism through religious sensitivity and philosophical insight. Basing his work on biblical and rabbinic sources, twentieth-century philosophy, and Christian theology, Michael Wyschogrod focuses on the depiction and personification of God. Rather than looking at God as a depersonalized omniscient being, Wyschogrod depicts God as engaged in human history and as a partner in a covenant with the Jewish people.

En dan ook nog een jood zonder godsdienst? Mij is vaak gevraagd waarom ik me jood voel, hoewel ik geen godsdienst heb. en wat het voor mij betekent een jood te zijn. In al mijn boeken heb ik niet over het judaïsme geschreven, maar joodse verhalen verteld. Nu wil ik het hebben over een ongewone cultuur en ongewone mensen van wie ik hou en die vanaf mijn kinderjaren richting hebben gegeven aan mijn leven: Abraham, Mozes, Ezra... Zij maakten deel uit van een mensheid die ten prooi was aan het kwaad en het middel vond zich tegen dat kwaad te beschermen dankzij het eerste monotheïsme en het boek dat het meest werd gelezen: de bijbel. Dat wil ik graag laten zien: de weg van een volk dat de eeuwen heeft overleefd. Arnaldo Momigliano (1908-87) was one of the most distinguished twentieth-century scholars of the classics and of ancient and modern history. Throughout his career, but especially in the final twenty years of his life, he wrote essays on a variety of Jewish themes and individuals. This volume collects twenty-six of these essays, most of which appear in English for the first time.

Momigliano acknowledged that his Judaism was the most fundamental inspiration for his scholarship, and the writings in this collection demonstrate how the ethical experience of the Hebraic tradition informed his other works. Part 1 is devoted entirely to writings on ancient and medieval Judaism. In these essays, Momigliano ranges over such subjects as the stages of rapport between Hellenism and Judaism, the figure of Flavius Josephus, and the salient moments of Maccabean history. Part 2 comprises Momigliano's writings on modern subjects. Here are profiles of Jewish scholars of the classical world (Bernays, Bickerman, and Finley) together with those of eminent representatives of contemporary Jewish thought (Strauss, Scholem, and Benjamin). These essays gain special significance alongside Momigliano's reflections on Italian Jewry and the Weberian interpretation of Judaism.

Silvia Berti's Introduction discusses Momigliano's religious and intellectual formation, the key events of his life, and the influence of Judaism on his mature scholarship. In his Preface, Momigliano offers a personal meditation on his own Judaism and that of his family.

By the time of his death, Momigliano had acquired an international following. This volume will at last give his admirers in the English-speaking world easy access to an important body of his work.

Memoirs of ten Jewish men and women (from the Netherlands, France, and Germany) on their experiences as children or adults during the Holocaust period, in hiding or in concentration camps, and on their postwar lives. Many members of their families perished. Some of the children were converted and had serious problems after the war in the attempt to rediscover their Jewish identity. Some adults chose to change their names and assimilate. also relates to postwar experiences of antisemitism in the Netherlands.

In this book, George Gilder asserts that widespread antagonism toward the current state of Israel springs from, like anti-Semitism everywhere, envy of superior accomplishment. Israel's sudden rise as a world capitalist and technological power, he argues, stems in part from the Jewish "culture of mind" and in part from Judaism itself, which, "perhaps more than any other religion, favors capitalist activity and provides a rigorous moral framework for it." Critics of Israel--in the U.S., in the surrounding countries of the Middle East and in Western European nations that are facing socialist decline--have failed the "Israel Test" because they seek to tear down this country's success rather than emulate it. America's ability and desire to defend Israel will define our future survival as a nation: "If Israel is destroyed," he says, "capitalist Europe will likely die as well, and America, as the epitome of productive and creative capitalism spurred by Jews, will be in jeopardy."

Hoe zou de situatie in het door God aan de joden `beloofde land` zijn verlopen wanneer Gods belofte indertijd zou zijn begrepen? Dan zouden er in het `Heilig land`, Israël en Palestina geen oorlogen, bezettingen, en etnische zuiveringen zijn uitgevoerd. De Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens zou dan niet geschreven hoeven zijn. De huidige tragische overeenkomsten met de Tweede Wereldoorlog zouden we dan nu niet waar kunnen nemen. Zijn deze vragen en constateringen niet al te provocerend, nu we kunnen waarnemen hoe de Verenigde Naties worden gebruuskeerd in het streven naar rechtvaardigheid en vrede in deze wereld? Heft daarom de psalmist in de reeks psalmen vele malen dramatisch zijn handen ten hemel bij het zien van alle onrecht? Waarom werpt hij zich schreiend ter aarde en provoceert en tuchtigt de mens vele malen. Spreekt zich zeer vrijmoedig uit en looft vele malen de Almachtige, zoals in psalm 180, staande bij de Klaagmuur!
