De Europese Unie is machtig geworden. We reizen zonder grenscontroles, betalen met de euro en op allerlei vlakken hebben Europese regels een impact op ons leven. Provides a new understanding of the recurrent rhetorical need to employ conservative rhetoric in support of a radical cause

The Womens Social and Political Union, the militant branch of the English womens suffrage movement, turned to arson, bombing, and widespread property destruction as a strategy to achieve suffrage for women. Because of its comparative rarity, terrorist violence by reform (as opposed to revolutionary) movements is underexplored, as is the discursive rhetoric that accompanies this violence. Largely because of the moral stance that drives such movements, the need to justify violence is greater for the reformist than for the revolutionary terrorist. The burden of rhetorical justification falls even more heavily on women utilizing violence, an option generally perceived as open only to men.

The militant suffragettes justified their turn to limited terrorism by arguing that their violence was part of a just war. Appropriating the rhetoric of a just war in defense of reformist violence allowed the suffragettes to exercise a traditional rhetorical vision for the sake of radical action. The concept of a just war allowed a spinning out of a fantasy of heroes, of a gallant band fighting against the odds. It challenged the imagination of the public to extend to women a heroic vision usually reserved for men and to accept the new expectations inherent in that vision. By incorporating the concept of a just war into their rhetoric, the WSPU leaders took the most conventional justification that Western tradition provides for the use of violence and adapted it to meet their unique circumstance as women using violence for political reform.

This study challenges the common view that the suffragettes use of military metaphors, their vilification of the government, and their violent attacks on property were signs of hysteria and self-destruction. Instead, what emerges is a picture of a deliberate, if controversial, strategy of violence supported by a rhetorical defense of unusual power and consistency.

Spelen er bij een interventie vaak geen andere belangen dan humanitaire? Kunnen diplomaten in New York wel meebeslissen over onze veiligheid?0En moet ook Europa daarin geen actievere rol spelen? Terechte vragen, waar dit boek dieper op ingaat.0'Waarom muren niet werken' dient doemdenkers van antwoord en houdt tegelijk de optimisten scherp. Nu populisme terrein wint en 'soevereiniteit' een buzzword is geworden, vereisen grensoverschrijdende dreigingen zoals terrorisme, klimaatverandering, illegale migratie, schendingen van de mensenrechten en humanitaire crisissen nieuwe vormen van internationale samenwerking. Een grotere rol toekennen aan een autonomere Europese Unie én aan het lokale niveau biedt oplossingen.

Op 2 februari 2009 besloten minister-president Balkenende en de meest betrokken ministers, na jarenlange debatten in politiek en samenleving, tot de instelling van een commissie onder voorzitterschap van mr. W.J.M. Davids, oud-president van de Hoge Raad der Nederlanden. Deze commissie heeft onderzoek gedaan naar de besluitvorming over het Nederlandse beleid inzake Irak in de periode van de zomer van 2002 tot de zomer van 2003. Bij haar onderzoek heeft de Commissie toegang gehad tot alle relevante informatie. Voorts werden gesprekken gevoerd met alle hoofdrolspelers en met tal van andere betrokkenen. In dit rapport worden de bevindingen en conclusies van het onderzoek gepresenteerd. De Commissie maakt inzichtelijk hoe de politieke besluitvorming is verlopen. Ook schept zij helderheid in tal van discussies die de afgelopen jaren in media en politiek zijn gevoerd, zoals: welke rol hebben volkenrechtelijke overwegingen gespeeld in de besluitvorming? Wat was de informatiepositie van AIVD en MIVD en hoe zijn politici daarmee omgegaan? Was er sprake van Nederlandse militaire betrokkenheid? De Commissie verwoordt tot slot haar bevindingen in een aantal conclusies.

De grote problemen van dit moment zijn voelbaar in de zorg, het onderwijs en op straat. Grondige maatregelen blijven uit door politieke controverse en verkeerde zuinigheid. NYFER reikt in deze uitgave mogelijkheden aan om doeltreffend de lange wachtlijsten, de belabberde staat van het onderwijs en toenemende onveiligheid op te lossen. Tegelijkertijd doet NYFER suggesties voor besparingen en extra inkomsten van de overheid, onder andere met een effectieve aanpak van het ziekteverzuim en een rechtvaardiger grondbeleid.

Met de financieel onderbouwde voorstellen van NYFER kan het nieuwe kabinet de kwaliteit van onze samenleving de komende jaren krachtig verbeteren. En anders kan de oppositie er haar voordeel mee doen. Overstag is kortom een cadeautje voor het kabinet, of ... munitie voor de oppositie.

Het zijn ruwe tijden. We zitten in een perfecte storm waarbij crises elkaar aanjagen. In Nederland is te lang gekozen voor polderen en uitstellen van lastige beslissingen. Nu moet de politiek volgens Jan Rotmans eindelijk het eerlijke verhaal vertellen. Dat de komende jaren moeilijk zullen blijven en dat we flink moeten investeren in de toekomst. Maar als we de pijn rechtvaardig verdelen, radicale keuzes durven maken en kiezen voor authentiek leiderschap ziet hij redenen voor optimisme. Want de onderstroom van mensen die werken aan een duurzame samenleving groeit snel. Net als een nieuw bewustzijn. Hoogleraar transitiekunde en duurzaamheid aan de Erasmus Universiteit Jan Rotmans (1961) is een internationale autoriteit in zijn vakgebied en publiceerde honderden wetenschappelijke artikelen en tientallen boeken.
