Van alle vormen van etnisch en raciaal vooroordeel heeft het antisemitisme verreweg de langste geschiedenis. Al in de Oudheid gaven de eerste christenen de Joden de schuld van Jezus’ kruisiging. In de Middeleeuwen kwamen daar nieuwe beschuldigingen bij zoals woeker, hostieschending, vergiftiging van bronnen en deelname aan samenzweringen tegen het christendom. Later ging men de Joden zien als een vijandig ras dat een bedreiging vormde voor de raszuiverheid van de Europeanen. In het middeleeuwse West-Europa vonden ook de eerste Jodenvervolgingen plaats. En het waren West-Europeanen die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog plannen smeedden om de Joden uit te moorden. Daarom gaat dit boek vooral over antisemitisme in West-Europa. In ieder tijdvak werden er nieuwe vooroordelen toegevoegd aan het anti-Joodse beeld zonder dat daarbij de oudere vooroordelen verdwenen. En zo, laat Chris Quispel op indringende wijze zien, is het antisemitisme door de eeuwen heen blijven bestaan.
