Catalogus bij een tentoonstelling over kunstschatten uit het Ottomaanse Rijk.

In 1915, Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) radically transformed the course of twentieth-century art with his "Black Square" painting and his manifesto "From Cubism to Suprematism." These works espoused a new art of pure geometricism, intended to be universally comprehensible regardless of cultural origin. Although he is famed for his rigorous pursuit of the "non-objective," Malevich in fact explored many strands of painting, embracing at various stages Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism and Cubism, as well as traditional Russian folk art. Drawing on the collections of Nikolai Khardzhiev and Georges Costakis--the two leading collectors of Russian avant-garde art, whose collections were largely assembled at a time when abstract art was banned in the Soviet Union--this catalogue traces the breadth of Malevich's career through his oil paintings, gouaches, drawings, sculptures and designs for opera and film. All phases of his development are represented here, from his early Impressionist-style work to his iconic Suprematist pieces, as well as his lesser-known figurative paintings and works on paper. These are contextualized alongside work by Malevich's contemporaries, such as Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Natalia Goncharova, Vera Pester, Ivan Puni and Mikhail Meno.

LHTB'ers uit de hele wereld strijken in de maand augustus massaal in Amsterdam neer voor de Gay Pride, de Drag Queen Olympics en de Hartjesdagen. De regenboogvlag gaat uit en tijdens de botenparade is iedereen 'pretty in pink'. De feestmaand is pas voorbij nadat extravagant uitgedoste drag queens over de Zeedijk hebben geparadeerd tijdens het eeuwenoude volksfeest Hartjesdag. Fotografe Shirley Agudo raakte gefascineerd door deze uitbundige en vrijgevochten manifestaties. Ze fotografeerde jarenlang de bezoekers van de festiviteiten en toont in het tweetalige boek 'Amsterdam Streethearts' hun flamboyante uitdossingen. Backstage mocht zij ook van dichtbij het proces van de transformatie volgen en dat zien we hier voor het eerst in boekvorm.

"Ze zijn op de vingers van één hand te tellen, de sportieve evenementen van wereldklasse die ontstonden eind negentiende, begin twintigste eeuw en nu nog elk jaar plaatsvinden: Milaan-San Remo, De Ronde van Vlaanderen, Parijs-Roubaix, Luik-Bastenaken-Luik, De Ronde van Lombardije. Slechts drie coureurs wonnen ze allemaal, deze wedstrijden die aan de wieg liggen van het wielrennen. Alle drie Vlaming: Eddy Merckx (hij won er 19), Rik Van Looy (8) en Roger De Vlaeminck (11). Het zijn sportmensen van vlees en bloed die deze klassiekers tot monumenten uit de sportgeschiedenis hebben gemaakt: Sean Kelly, Fred De Bruyne, Hennie Kuiper, Coppi, Bartali, Moser, Argentin, Poulidor, Fignon, Hinault, Cancellara, Boonen, Valverde. Goed een eeuw na het ontstaan van deze vijf wielermonumenten is de tijd rijp om het sportieve en historische rapport ervan te maken en de geschiedenis haarfijn te reconstrueren. Philippe Vandenbergh volgt als journalist van 'La Libre Belgique' al meer dan een kwarteeuw de grote wielerklassiekers op de voet. Hij heeft een passie voor klassementen, omdat hij vindt dat de overwinning van een 23ste Ronde van Vlaanderen evenveel waard is als de 100ste"--Page 4 of cover.

Willem Frederik Hermans koesterde een grote belangstelling voor de kunst en het ambacht van de fotografie. Decennialang was hij zelf actief als fotograaf en ook schreef hij geregeld over het onderwerp. Hermans had daarnaast een voorliefde voor de collagetechniek. Hij knipte illustraties uit tijdschriften en kranten om er, vaak in combinatie met eigen foto's, absurdistische collages van te maken. Hoewel hij maar spaarzaam foto's en collages publiceerde, verschenen er in de laatste jaren van Hermans' schrijverschap toch drie titels waarin dergelijk beeldend werk was verzameld: 'Koningin Eenoog' (1986), dat een keuze uit zijn foto's uit de periode 1948-1985 bevatte, 'Het hoedenparadijs' (1991), een selectie van zijn collages, en de bijzondere fotokaartenset 'Een foto uit eigen doos!' (1994). In dit achttiende deel van de 'Volledige Werken' zijn deze titels voor het eerst in één band bijeengebracht. Het deel opent met 'Fotobiografie' (1969), Hermans' autobiografie in foto's en documenten.

"This publication accompanies Fondation Beyeler?s survey on the great photographic innovator Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968). Tillmans first made a name for himself in the early 1990s, with photographs that captured an entire generation and a youth culture of which he was part, and which are now iconic images of that era. However, he quickly expanded his focus, creating works with and without a camera, producing photographs printed as C-prints on photographic paper, as inkjet prints on paper, or as photocopies. Some of these photographs acquire a sculptural, objectlike quality. Tillmans has also developed new compositional and formal, anti-hierarchical ways of installing his pictures in spaces. This substantial volume offers a comprehensive overview of his achievements."

The photographs that Chris Killip (born 1946) took in Northern England between 1973 and 1985 were first published by Secker & Warburg as In Flagrante in 1988, a volume that quickly established itself as the most important 1980s photobook on England and a classic of the genre. Compassionate but unwavering in its gaze, In Flagrante documented industrial Northern England in decline, suffering from the aftershocks of neoliberal economic strategies most brutally embodied in the policies of Margaret Thatcher. "The objective history of England doesn't amount to much if you don't believe in it, and I don't," reflects Killip. "And I don't believe that anyone in these photographs does either, as they face the reality of deindustrialization in a system which regards their lives as disposable."
Chris Killip: In Flagrante Two revisits the classic photobook with a beautifully produced, radically updated presentation: each double-page spread features a single image on the right side. Strident in its belief in the primacy and power of the photographic image, In Flagrante Two allows for and embraces ambiguities and contradictions arising from the unadorned narrative sequence, completely devoid of text--forcing viewers to truly look, to witness.

Wat gaat er verloren als een taal niet meer klinkt?

"In 1677 moet uitgever en boekverkoper Timotheus ten Hoorn zich bij de schout melden om zich te verantwoorden voor de illustraties in het boek 'De dwaalende hoer'. Driehonderd jaar later verschijnen tijdschriften als 'Big boobs' en 'Cocky' in oplages van meer dan 100.000 exemplaren. Wat ooit begon met een stel vieze boekjes die alleen onder de toonbank verkocht werden, groeide uit tot een ware industrie van seksblaadjes die open en bloot bij de sigarenboer verkrijgbaar waren. Maar hoe veranderde 'De dwaalende hoer' (1677) in 'Chick' (1968-2009) of 'Candy' (1968-2016)? Aan de hand van prachtige, opruiende en prikkelende illustraties vertelt 'Onder de toonbank' de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse erotica en pornografie. Experts als Inger Leemans, Marita Mathijsen en Bert Sliggers nemen de belangrijkste bloeiperiodes van de Nederlandse porno onder de loep. Het boek omspant een periode van meer dan honderd jaar wereldgeschiedenis, van 1850 tot 1960, van koningin Victoria tot de moord op president Kennedy. De 200 iconische foto's tonen de opkomst en ondergang van wereldrijken, mijlpalen van wetenschap, industrie en kunst, oorlogstragedies en vredestichters. Kortom: de levens van mannen en vrouwen die de geschiedenis hebben gevormd. Doordat de foto's door Marina Amaral op historisch verantwoorde wijze ingekleurd zijn, komt het verleden soms griezelig dichtbij.

De radio- en televisiesatire van Van Kooten en De Bie (1963-1998), de jaarlijkse 'Bescheurkalender' (1973-1986), romans en verhalen in tweeënveertig boeken en luisterboeken, honderden Treitertrendcolumns en Modermismen, serieuze essays, luchtige lezingen, songteksten en scenario's, voor- en nawoorden, haiku, gelegenheidsgedichten, theaterteksten, necrologieën, enzowoord enzowoord: Kees van Kooten voorvoelde zijn onthutsende productie al op vijfjarige leeftijd, toen hij in een kattebelletje aan zijn vader schreef: "Ik blijf aan de gang met de sreiffen". Een jaar geleden begon hij aan zijn eerste vijfenzeventigjaarlijkse balansopruiming. Dit resulteerde in een karavaan van drieëntwintig ordners vol materiaal van her en der en toen en nu, veelsoortige teksten die nooit in boekvorm zijn verschenen. Streng maar rechtvaardig selecteerde hij het leukste en het mooiste van het sterkste en het beste van zichzelf; door Piet Schreuders al dan niet in facsimile samengebracht in een ongemeen gevarieerde, dikke en rijk geïllustreerde 'Wehkamp-catalogus'.

Mark Rothko (1903-1970) wordt beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw. Maar wat maakt zijn werk zo bijzonder? This first volume in a major new series of illustrated biographies of Magnum photographers traces the life and achievements of Eve Arnold, who captured an incredible array of subjects with remarkable clarity and compassion. Eve Arnold (1912–2012) was born to a poor immigrant family in Philadelphia and became a photographer by chance. In 1950 Arnold was a 38-year-old Long Island housewife when she enrolled in a six-week photography course that led to her groundbreaking photo essay on black fashion models in Harlem. She went on to become the first woman to join Magnum Photos and, eventually, one of the most accomplished photojournalists of her time. Filled with reproductions of Arnold’s acclaimed photographs, shot in both color and black and white, as well as previously unseen archival images, this biography relates Arnold’s bold images to the fascinating story of their making. Renowned for her intimate portraits of figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Malcolm X, and Queen Elizabeth, Arnold was equally comfortable documenting the lives of the poor and dispossessed. "I don’t see anybody as either ordinary or extraordinary. I see them simply as people in front of my lens." To her images of migrant workers, disabled veterans, and protesters for civil rights in the US and against apartheid in South Africa, she brought an unflinching eye and a strong sense of social justice. This highly engrossing narrative tells a compelling story of an intrepid artist whose life’s purpose was to report on the lives of others.

Filled with reproductions of Kehinde Wiley’s bold, colorful, and monumental work, this book encompasses the artist’s various series of paintings as well as his sculptural work—which boldly explore ideas about race, power, and tradition. Celebrated for his classically styled paintings that depict African American men in heroic poses, Kehinde Wiley is among the expanding ranks of prominent black artists—such as Sanford Biggers, Yinka Shonibare, Mickalene Thomas, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye—who are reworking art history and questioning its depictions of people of color. Co-published with the Brooklyn Museum of Art for the major touring retrospective, this volume surveys Wiley’s career from 2001 to the present. It includes early portraits of the men Wiley observed on Harlem’s streets, and which laid the foundation for his acclaimed reworkings of Old Master paintings by Titian, van Dyke, Manet, and others, in which he replaces historical subjects with young African American men in contemporary attire: puffy jackets, sneakers, hoodies, and baseball caps.
