    Churchill's Deception....

Churchill's Deception. The Dark Secret that Destroyed Nazi Germany

Engels. Halflinnen met stofomslag, in zeergoede staat

Churchill's Deception is the gripping story of how Winston Churchill outwitted Adolf Hitler into invading the Soviet Union - a move that changed the course of World War II. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Louis C. Kilzer has uncovered documentation which exposes this great and untold story, adding a new dimension to the legacy of Winston Churchill. Churchill's Deception describes how Great Britain shunned opportunities to end the war because it sought to dismember Germany, not merely to destroy Hitler. German generals were ready to topple the Fuhrer in 1939 and 1940, but only if Britain agreed not to take advantage of a civil war that would follow. England did not agree. And because of Hitler's own obsession about obtaining a pact with Great Britain, he offered to return his Western conquests in exchange for guarantees concerning Germany's interests in the East. Though Churchill held out for more, he took note of Hitler's obsessive desire for peace with England. He stoked the Fuhrer's illusions about Britain's desires for peace, in order, at first, to gain time to build its defenses. Later, when it appeared that Hitler was on the verge of victory, the British launched a final bid to hold him off. They invited the Deputy Fuhrer of Germany, Rudolf Hess, to attend a peace conference at which Hitler would negotiate the coming invasion of the Soviet Union with the British "Peace Party". Though Hitler did turn his attentions East, in the end, the game was not successful for England. She lost her empire anyway, while failing to stop a war that took more than fifty million lives. Had the British adopted an anti-Hitler, instead of an anti-Germany, foreign policy, the history of the twentiethcentury could have been dramatically altered. Kilzer raises the significant question: Would another policy have avoided the Holocaust? Engrossing and controversial, Churchill's Deception will fuel the debate over Churchill's legacy, and be an invaluable addition to any World War II collection.

    Who Chose the Gospels?...

Who Chose the Gospels? Probing the Great Gospel Conspiracy

Engels, gebonden met stofomslag, in zeer goede staat

The Bible contains four Gospels which tell the story of Jesus of Nazareth. And yet, many more Gospels once existed. Who, then, determined which Gospels would, for the next two thousand years, serve as the main gateways to Jesus and his teaching?Recent books and films have traced the decision to a series of fourth-century councils and powerful bishops. After achieving victory over their rivals for the Christian name, these key players, we are now told, conspired to 'rewrite history' to make it look like their version of Christianity was the original one preached by Jesus and his apostles: the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John became the prime tools for their re-sculpting of the Christian story, leading to the destruction ofpreviously treasured writings like the Gospels of Judas, Mary, and Thomas. Are the four canonical Gospels, then, in the Bible as the result of a great, ecclesiastical conspiracy? Or does this explanation itself represent another 'rewriting of history', this time by a group of modern academics?Who Chose the Gospels? takes us to the scholarship behind the headlines, examining the great (and ongoing) controversy about how to look at ancient books about Jesus. How the four Biblical Gospels emerged into prominence among their competitors is a crucial question for everyone interested in understanding the historical Jesus and the development of the Christian church.

    The Narcissism Epidemic

    The Narcissism Epidemic

Engels. Paperback, in zeer goede staat

From the Publisher: Narcissism-a very positive and inflated view of the self-is everywhere. It's what you have if you're a politician and you've strayed from your wife, and it's why five times as many Americans undergo plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures today than did just ten years ago. It's the value that parents teach their children with song lyrics like "I am special. Look at me," the skill teenagers and young adults obsessively hone on Facebook and MySpace, and the reason high school students physically beat classmates and then broadcast their violence on YouTube for all to see. It's the message preached by prosperity gospel and the vacuous ethos spread by celebrity newsmakers. And it's what's making people depressed, lonely, and buried under piles of debt. Jean M. Twenge's influential and controversial first book, Generation Me, generated a national debate with its trenchant depiction of the challenges twenty-and thirtysomethings face emotionally and professionally in today's world-and the fallout these issues create for older generations as well as employers. Now, Dr. Twenge is on to a new incendiary topic that has repercussions for every age-group and class: the pernicious spread of narcissism in today's culture and its catastrophic effects. Dr. Twenge joins forces with W. Keith Campbell, Ph. D., a nationally recognized expert on narcissism, for The Narcissism Epidemic, their eye-opening exposition of the alarming rise of narcissism-and they show how to stop it. Every day, you encounter the real costs of narcissism: in your relationships and family, in the workplace and the economy at large, in schools that fail to teach necessary skills, in culture, and in politics. Even the world economy has been damaged by risky, unrealistic overconfidence. Filled with arresting anecdotes that illustrate the hold narcissism has on us today-from people hiring fake paparazzi in order to experience feeling famous to college students who won't leave a professor's office until their B+ becomes an A. The Narcissism Epidemic is at once a riveting window into the consequences of narcissism, a probing analysis of the culture at large, and a prescription to combat the widespread problems caused by narcissism. As a society, we have a chance to slow the epidemic of narcissism once we learn to identify it, minimize the forces that sustain and transmit it, and treat it where we find it. Drawing on their own extensive research as well as decades of other experts' studies, Drs. Twenge and Campbell show us how.
