Memoirs by 17 former Jewish inhabitants of the town of Groningen, describing their lives in the 1930s and their experiences during World War II. They refer to the Nazi anti-Jewish measures; the involvement of the NSB in the persecution of the Jews; survival in hiding; raids; experiences in the camps of Westerbork, Theresienstadt, and Auschwitz; the position of German Jewish refugees; and the role of the Jewish Council. Ch. 1 (p. 1-10) discusses the history of the Jewish community in Groningen from the end of the 16th century. Relates the exclusion of Jews from the guilds, and restrictions in settlement and religious practices until ca. 1740. Ch. 2 (p. 11-24) surveys Jewish life in Groningen from 1920 to ca. 1950. Sketches prewar anti-Jewish stereotypes, the arrival of German Jewish refugees, events during World War II, and postwar antisemitism.
