Defeat at Gallipoli, The Dardanelles Commission, Part II, 1915-16
Stationery Office (Great Britain);Pocket, mooi exemplaar, zo goed als nieuw.
The naval attempt by the British to force the Dardanelles was abandoned in March 1915. Rather than losing face, the military commanders decided to send a large army to the area. Picking up the story from where the earlier volume, Lord Kitchener and Winston Churchill left off, this second part of the Dardanelles Commission's report deals with the disastrous military campaign to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula using ground forces. As the story unfolds, we learn how the Allies were unable to make any headway against an enemy who was well prepared and well positioned. Within a few months the Allies had suffered a humiliating defeat, and thousands of men had lost their lives. The realisation of the government's incompetence in handling this affair was instrumental in the removal of Herbert Asquith as Prime Minister in December 1916.
