Beelden zijn er in allerlei soorten. Sommige behoren tot het domein van de beeldende kunst (schilderijen en tekeningen bijvoorbeeld), andere worden gemaakt door een camera of een computer (foto's, films, tv- en digitale beelden). Een derde groep, die wij doorgaans niet als beelden aanduiden, bestaat in het nabootsende spel van kinderen en acteurs. Van een heel andere orde zijn de beelden in ons, de mentale beelden (denkbeelden, herinneringsbeelden, droombeelden). We spreken zelfs van beeldende taal, hoewel het hierbij alleen om woorden gaat. Wat een beeld eigenlijk is, hoe het in elkaar zit, waartoe het dient en hoe men erop reageert is nog nooit het voorwerp geweest van een alomvattende beeldkunde of iconologie. Toch is iedereen overtuigd van de grote invloed van het beeld, zeker in onze 'beeldcultuur' die vaak ervaren wordt als een bedreiging voor het geschreven woord dat sinds mensenheugenis onze beschaving heeft beheerst. Tegelijkertijd erkent men dat het beeld onmisbaar geworden is in vrijwel alle sectoren van communicatie.
