Hij denkt aan eer en glorie, maar tijdens zijn eerste maanden aan het front ziet hij vooral veel kameraden sneuvelen. Het miserabele bestaan in de loopgraven staat hem algauw tegen. Hij en zijn lotgenoten worden belaagd door granaten een geweervuur, maar ook door sluipend gas, het gas dat Boyd ver na de oorlog noodlottig zal worden: zijn longen zijn onherstelbaar aangetast. Soms beslissen de bevelhebbers in hun almachtige wijsheid dat de mannen moeten optrekken zonder enige dekking.
