Opgeklommen uit de armoede van het joodse getto bepaalde De Miranda samen met de legendarische wethouder Wibaut in de jaren '20 en '30 het gezicht van het snel groeiende Amsterdam. Tot zijn val in 1939, toen de SDAP-politicus in de pers valselijk werd beschuldigd van corruptie. Doordat de oorlog uitbrak bleven de gedrukte vellen in de kelders van De Arbeiderspers liggen.
